Toddler in a MH

When our daughter was that age, we had to hold her hands and guide her down the stairs. We had to constantly watch to make sure she did not push the screen door open and take the big fall down 4 stairs. It was a battle because I worry about my girl. Now that she is almost 3, I still have to make sure she hangs onto the handle as she steps down the stairs.

I know you don't have anything with you right now, but if this is something that might be happening often this Summer, you can invest in a child gate, or even an X-pen for a dog, which you would put around the stairs, to keep the little one away from them.

If you have the steps cutting down in the middle of the room, you may want to get a piece of plywood, that you can lay over the steps, to hide them. Of course, that means more work for you, when you want to go in/out, but I'm sure that you are more concerned about the safety of the Grand-daughter.

We've got a 3 year old, and we worry too! Fortunately, the steps are alongside the kitchen cabinet, so sorta out of site...but we still worry.

I had a similar problem some years ago with aged mother, mother-in-law,and Aunt. A piece of 1/2 inch plywood cut to the proper dimensions worked great. When not on the floor,it was placed along the wall behind the chair.

Our coach came with a drop in panel that covers the stairs, but putting it in place and removing it was kind of a pain. To make it more convenient to use, I added hinges, a lift strap, and a latch to hold it open, along with attaching a hand rail underneath that matches the other side when the cover is open.

Ok, Dutch, you're hired, too. I need someone with your handyman skills to come to my house!

My daughter was just learning to walk and we discovered that when she grabbed the door handle and pushed up, the door opened. Fortunately we discovered this while parked as she took a tumble out the door onto the ground.

Needless to say, we kept both locks engaged after that. Wish there was a third lock higher up that we could engage.

And I installed a screen door lock to keep the cats inside. Think it would work for toddlers too. Just attach one of there:

1 and 1/4" Half Turn Button found at any hardware store, to the screen door so it can lock to the door frame. That way the toddler can't push open the door and fall out! One word of caution, if your outer and inner doors lock together, somehow disable that function, or you may find your self locked out of your coach. Don't ask how I know this!!!

Dutch can you post some pictures of how you hinged the drop in panel. My MH has a panel too and your idea sounds like something I'd like to do.
