No good deed goes unpunished. Why was all their belongings and their shelter taken? Now they have no clothes, no transportation and no place to sleep. Think of the message that this sends to those that try to do the right thing. I'll remember this if confronted with the same decision. It is a shame.
Many years ago, while sailing in the Gulf of Mexico, I encountered a floating body. I immediately called the Coast Guard on my radio. I was asked to bring it aboard and take it to them. This body was very ripe and appeared very fragile so I declined. Then I was asked to stay with it until they got there as it was very difficult to locate a body. I had to wait 5 hours for a cutter to arrive and I'll swear I could smell that odor until the day I sold the boat. Lesson: I see NOTHING and if I do see something I call NO ONE. (That's probably not true, but I would have to talk to myself to do it again)
