Water heater issue

Hello everybody!

I have 2002 hurricane RV with a possible bad water heater. The problem I'm having is every time we turn it on in 5 minutes it starts blowing hot water. If it is bad is this something that I can do on my own?

Thanks

Follow the Pianoman's advice above. If that doesn't solve the problem, head on over to your local Home Depot and pick up a new pressure relief valve. They're not expensive and yes, you can do it yourself. Make sure your heater is OFF and COLD before removing the valve. Also make sure the water is turned OFF....Dennis

If PRV is blowing after heating water than the PRV is very weak OR your t-stats are NOT opening when temp set point has been reached.

Normal should open when temp reaches 130*-140*F depending on Brand.
High temp (ECO) should open at 180*F if normal doesn't
PRV's lift at 150# and/or 210*F

Either one (PRV or T-stat set) cost roughly $20
Is it time for your medication or mine?

Hi,

First, turn off the water heater. Then after it has cooled off (about 6 hours), turn off the pump (or turn off shore water), trip the relief valve, and turn on a hot water tap. This will reestablish the air bubble that is supposed to be at the top of the tank. Now turn the water heater on again. If that does not solve the problem then replace the pressure relief valve.

I agree, replace the safety valve. It is probably right near the crack pressure. Using the water and then stopping may cause just enough surge to cause it to open.

Had this happen to a small water heater at the hunting shack and I replaced the pressure relief valve. The old one went bad.

Cheap try before spending money on a new heater.
