Will a Double Din Radio fit in a PRE 2008 E450?

Anybody install a Double Din radio in their 2000-2007 E450? Sure would lie to get a larger than single din radio in there. I read somewhere that the E450 size is actually a 1.8 DIN and mods had to be made to get a Double DIN to fit.

.

I did this mod 2 years ago with this Kenwood double-DIN deck. It is no longer available
but I'm sure fit is the same as the current offerings

They also include the Metra 95-5817 install kit ... but I did NOT use it. Reading the
instructions, you can see that once it is snapped in, you cannot remove the
head unit without removing the dash!!! ... read that again... Of course, using
the install kit will eliminate the TINY vertical gaps (see pics below), but
IMHO you can hardly notice them.

How did you find the E series?

I believe you have to search under Econoline. That link I have in my original post is to compatable double din units on Crutchfield with the modification disclaimer.

I had a Pioneer 2-din DVD receiver AVH-X1500DVD installed in our 2006 E450 when the factory radio failed in 2013. That plus a couple of Infinity Kappa door speakers yielded much improved sound.

If you can't find a double din or similar that will work, you can get a single din with a screen that retracts like this one - http://www.crutchfield.com/p_104BV860B/Boss-BV860B.html

Search E350 van on Crutchfield. DOuble DIN fits and Crutchfield will show all the units that will work, with the "modified fit" disclaimer. The install kits will include the adapter plate to fit the E-series, and that instruction sheet will show what needs to be trimmed (not much, just the top and bottom flanges, really).

and Another One

I changed the radio in or 2002 E450. It was 1.0 DIN and it seemed the Hole was 1.5 DIN, not the full 2.0 DIN. I learned that fast, looking at 1. our E450, and 2. daughter's 2005 Explorer which is 2.0 DIN and her husband had just installed an elaborate JVC unit, 2.0 DIN.

One of the two links above mentions at least one "adapter" that's a 0.5 DIN "filler" and our coach already had one. It came to us with a 1.0 DIN Panasonic that the CD no longer worked in. I replaced it with a 1.0 DIN Dual from Amazon that works just great.

Your coach, your time and effort. Personally, 1.0 + 0.5 Filler. Actually I feel more strongly about that NOW, AFTER I had that big dash Face (they call it "Bezel") off, chasing an A/C control problem.

The "RV Radio" if that's what you have, is a good concept, because it offers bigger buttons and a larger display than 1.0 DIN. Just wasn't very good as a Radio... Since I don't do much looking away from mirrors and road ahead, my A-Driver does things like Radio, Phone, etc. Her title is Navigator, but she's actually Bombardier, so beware.

Oh, since you have this E-Series chassis, IF your A/C goes to Defrost Vents on acceleration or climbing grades, with Mode Knob set for something else, get with me about it. Or search WEB yourself. Easy to test and fix, just DON'T tear that Bezel out first!

As I understand it, installing a double-DIN just requires cutting the hole a bit larger in the dash and maybe putting in some sort of trim. The factory hole is a bit smaller than double-DIN, but there's nothing too hard about enlarging it. (I have not done this myself, though.)

I'd look for the E series under "Econoline" for 2005...though realistically, any double-DIN radio should fit after dash modification. If you're looking for door speakers, having the right vehicle selected may be more important.

Perhaps not the exact response you need but I will try. ๐Ÿ™‚

I recently put a single din with the plastic frame from Crurchfield in my 2007. Looks great! Super easy install. When I was searching on Crutchfield, most that showed as compatable after a search were, as you already know, single din. That said, I seem to recall one or two double dins from Crutchfield but they didn't have the features I wanted or they were much more expensive than the single din options. I could be wrong though. Good luck!

Edit:

Just checked. More than 20 options but as you said, it requires a modification that doesn't allow for the original stereo to be re-installed.
