New Year Food Resolutions? .

Reading some of the comments on the "Manliness" thread inspired me to write this.

Our eating habits have evolved greatly over the last 25 odd years of being together. When I first met the man he had a typical bachelor's apartment complete with a glass D/R table and black leather and chrome director chairs. His pride and joy in the kitchen was the toaster oven his parents had given him for his first apartment some 15 years before and his freezer was stocked with copious amounts of ice.

Enter me and we have a mahogany D/R table that seats eight, Phillip Stark chairs,"modern stove and fridge (OK. I admit that I stabbed the old refrigerator to death; manual defrost was just not on my agenda anymore but but I dinna shoot the original stove's deputy). And 3 different freezer units filled with bones, stocks/broths, homemade prepped dishes, flash frozen veggies and aromatics and of course meats on sale.
Yeehup we'll be ready for the revolution or zombie apocalypse, which ever comes first:B.
Oh and I replaced the toaster oven at my earliest convenience with a microwave oven which next became a convection/microwave oven which delights "our" lives more than the nuker did.

Along with the other accouterments, the man, gained a someone with an avid interest in changing how we eat so we could continue our Oscar and Felix battle for as long as possible. In moving, he recently tried to hide 4 cans of Chef Boyardee; 1 can survived. Every single can of Franco American gravy of whatever type, didn't.

More vegetables eaten, less processed foods and ingredients and finally less protein and carbs.

This year I've decided to try to eliminate as much sugar as possible from our diets. Inspired by an article in a local paper, I decided/decreed we should embark on a sugarless month and see where it takes us. That means his preferred store bought salad dressings are toast but his acquired taste for crystallized ginger and sugarless dried fruit will past muster.

Any want to do changes thought or planned for on your end?
  • I love to cook. I would like to try to make something new each week. I always wanted to make biscotti, made it a few days ago. I made a white pizza using flatbread with roasted chicken and roasted red peppers. My inlaws were over the other day (he's 94, she's 90) and I made white navy beans with ham soup in the crockpot. Not sure what I'm going to try next.
  • Moderate carbs, more veggies & salads. Moderate booze. Tried gluten free & it didn't do much... Walking is on our horizon, but hubby has been sick this week. Keeping strict resolutions has never worked for us...
  • I like to call them habits because resolutions seem so temporary to me. Just saying.:R

    Moderation in all things, including in the making of resolutions:B
  • PRUNES AND RAW EGGS!!!!!!! You're gonna kill him Girl. LOL

    Fry the eggs in Bacon grease with toast slathered with butter til it drips off his chin. Give him a pot of coffee and a nice 12 year old single malt he will be in dog heaven

    Bravo for you!

    The man goes through 1 lb bags of unsalted nuts nightly for snacking to gain fiber. He'll eat most any nuts he can find but I'm partial to hazelnuts and Turkish pistachios when I can find 'em. Think it's time to make a trip to Sahadi's in Brooklyn and load up at a good price.

    I also took a page out of my Nana's breakfast feeding of Papa and keep stewed prunes (and other dried fruit) on hand. Neither of us have been able to follow through with his next morning course of a soft boiled egg......sadly, YUCK!, on my end, but guessing the man would be fine with 'em. I uhm just can't bring self to do it:S.

    We switched to salad over dinner plates some time back for our regular meals to control portions; kinda tricks your mind into thinking your tummy is full. Buffet plates are pretty much verboten on our end.

    Yeahhh, I, did that back in my 20's:B.
    Too many times, Sara Lee's pound cake topped with hot Stouffer's escalloped apples and followed by vanilla ice cream, was my answer to being a newly minted adult;).
    Worked fine until I had an insulin attack prolly brought on by a microwaved snack of a Kaiser roll overloaded with sugar, butter and finished with ReddiWhip and a cup of joe made with vanilla extract, mo mo sugah, lots o' heavy cream and more whipped cream:E.

    Lesson learned early and I still take no regular meds to keep on my path to annoying people into my '90's. The man is on hypertension meds but the dosage has been lowered over the years to take into account his diet changes.
