Advice needed on BSOD Scam!

Suddenly on our other computer there was a bright blue screen accompanied by a loud beeping that sounded like a timer. A message said "BSOD: Register Server Failed with an error code....." and also said that my Microsoft computer is blocked! It told me to call a number immediately and "certified Microsoft technicians" would unblock my computer. I suspected it was a scam, and there seemed to be no way to get out of it, so I immediately turned the computer off.

I did a search (with the laptop I'm typing on now) and found that it is a scam as I suspected. There were some solutions suggested to get rid of the virus, but I have to be able to turn on the computer and use it to follow those directions.

It's a Lenova desktop that we purchased less than 3 months ago with Windows 10 already installed.

What can I do? I'd appreciate your help! Thanks

Try a Power OFF. Sit one minute and re-power up.

Or, do a System Restore to a previous Restore Point that you had set up yourself or was generated by the system at some point.

Google the actual wording on the BSOD and include the word clean or remove. Look through the results for a reputable Anti-Virus software company. They sometimes make available a tool to clean the virus etc from a computer.

Turn on the computer, as it is starting hold down the power button until it shuts off. once off restart it and it will tell you that something went wrong, do you want to start in safe mode? etc.

Thanks for your replies. Hoping to have time to chat with Microsoft tech support on my tablet or laptop, since it immediately pops up again when I start the computer, and blocks me from doing anything.

If you click on the link it will ask you to pay for removal of the malware. Don't do it, obviously.

Sorry about your problem, but I had to laugh at Microsoft - I read one of their adds the other day that said their virus prtection was so good that you didn't need to use anything else. It didn't take people long to get around it. Let MS know what you think of their protection when you talk to them.

I've seen this before, it depends on the actual "BSOD" but I fixed a friend's computer by changing the home page on Internet Explorer. It was pretty apparent that it wasn't an actual BSOD when I could run Firefox and Chrome.

...Well, that, plus an AV scan/Malwarebytes for the rest. It has been working fine since.

Microsoft will never say they detected a problem and to call them. I would expect when you restart your computer all will be fine.
