Alfa set up problem

I got a new AWSU and it's working great.

GOT IT!! I now have better park wifi AND DirecTV On Demand!!! I got a NetGear WNCE 2001 Universal Adapter. I hooked it up to my laptop and "programmed" it. Then I disconnected it and reconnected to the back of the DirecTV DVR. Then I got an Alfa R36 and an Alfa AWUS036H. Hooked them together with a USB then to the laptop via ethernet and programed that set-up. I searched for a DirecTV On Demand show and it's playing right now. Before this setup I could not get any On Demand. Yeehaw!!! The gal may be a little slow on the up-take sometimes but I never give up!!

You may just want to return it for refund? After looking more into the R36, it appears that some Alfa USB WiFi adapters have trouble being recognized by it. It may possibly be the result of an R36 firmware issue. How comfortable are you in updating router firmware?


You may instead want to invest in a another router/repeater such as this ASUS N300, available for $40. at TigerDirect. You should be able to use a separate high-gain external antenna if you desire. In any case, you wont need either Alfa adapters with a repeater.

Yes, it powers up when directly into computer. I just got a return label from Amazon and am ordering another one. We'll see what happens with the second one.

Does the Alfa WiFi adapter power up if plugged directly into your computer?

1492 - I get to step 7 where it's scanning and none show....my AWUS is plugged into the R36 but it's light is NOT on. Guess I need to return it and get one that works.

Basically, you need to setup configuration of the R36 router/repeater. Here are the step-by-step instructions from Alfa. I'll admit, Alfa could have done a better job of making it user friendly. A more intuitive setup wizard would have been helpful. Yet not out of line for manually configuring most routers.

You already have the capability to share WiFi with other devices using Ad-Hoc ICS or Hosted Networks(command prompt) built into Windows, by just plugging the Alfa adapter directly into your computer. Generally, takes a few clicks to setup, but only good for your current session - you'll have to do this each time you disconnect from the park's WiFi.

Or you can use a free app such as WiFi HotSpot Creator or Virtual Router, which are similar to Connectify. Both will allow you easily setup and share WiFi with your other devices using your computer. The park's WiFi just sees one device from you, though you can have as many as supported on your end.

R36: How to set up with AWUS036NHR and AWUS036NH

1 Unplug all internet or wireless connection.
2 Connect the R36 in your computer ( it has to be alone, 36NH will not be connected ).
3 On the internet browser type 192.168.2.1
4 In the screen type the login name : admin, and the password: admin
5 In the next screen go to EASY SETUP and select USB Wireless Adapter.
6 Connect the AWUS036NH or the AWUSo36NHR

I have the R36 so I can use the wifi with several devices. When I hook the AWUS to the R36 there is no power to the AWUS so it's not working.

Looks like you done everything necessary to connect to the park's WiFi if you've got past the password stage?

Just one question? Why do you need the R36? Do you require an Ethernet(cable) connection? If not, you don't need to even connect the R36. Just run the USB cable from the Alfa WiFi adapter directly into your computer.
