I have a hundred dollar 8" Android tablet and would like to explore reading electronic books on the cheap. What is a good app and book source

I've been using KOBO that I just recently come across. They also market some stand alone ereaders.

I've been using the paid version of FBReader which handles all of the major formats. It's available in the Google Play store.

It also has a feature which will read an .EPUB or .PDF for those times where an audio book isn't available and I'd like to listen while driving.

On my tablet I have these readers

Amazon Kindle

ALreader

DOCS

XODO PDF reader

With these I can read all ebook formats and plain text files and PDF files

I do buy ebooks from Amazon
I also download free ebooks from Bain Books website
Free service manuals in PDF or text when I can locate them on other sites
Except for service manuals the ebooks are fiction
Sometimes something historical catches my interest

most library systems have apps and free downloads. if you decide you like them concider buying a real e-reader like kindle or kobo. they are easier on the eyes with the e-ink tech and the battery lasts forever.

Install an e-reader app like Moon+ Reader that handles epub (as well as pdf), and start searching for free epub sites. Not going to have the latest or greatest, but the price is right, if that's what you're looking for. The local library option works as well; that's what we use for my MIL with a Kindle Paperwhite.

Check your community library. For me it was as simple as getting a library card which enabled me to access the the e-book catalog. If you're an Amazon Prime member they offer a 2 or 3 month Kindle unlimited offer, $9.99 a month thereafter. You would just need to download the Kindle app to your device.

Most public libraries have some type of ebook lending. Many use national services like Overdrive or Hoopla, so even smaller libraries can offer the service.
