activate the SIM using a normal phone, and then put it into a hotspot. The only way they'll know is when you call in for technical support, so be sure to put the SIM back in a phone before you do.

I'm playing with a new toy right now, cheap from Jeff's website. A USB GSM/CDMA modem. It's an adapter that you can plug a laptop WWAN module into and use as if it were built into the computer. So far it's only working with my Linux systems - the WWAN module I bought is so old, it's not been supported by Windows since the days of XP.

I have a Freedompop SIM in there right now, through AT&T. I get about 20mbit on the download. This Freedompop account btw is one of those "NO HOTSPOT" accounts, but it works fine in a hotspot.

I looked at their offers and it appears that this plan cannot use a hotspot. Do you know if that is correct? Here are their HotSpot plans which are much more limited:

Absolutely.. I look at how much "Green" on the map not how many people.

I have been with T-mobile so long it was Omnipoint when I signed up.
Now for many years coverage was a tad... Week in some of the places I park. but of late they have really improved. Where I'm at right now (Park Wi-Fi much better) T-mobile 5 years ago would have been iffy and bandwidth limited. Today full 4Glte and strong.

The other park I summer at.. Same song 2nd verse.

The three parks I winter at.... One HAD good wi-fi iffy T-Mobile now Iffy-Wi-Fi and good T-moble.
The other two had no wifi One still does) and Great T-mobile.
The other one no has great Wi-Fi and the site I like for other reasons.... Well if the antenna falls over ... I'm at risk of damage so the signal is STRONG!!!!!

Also, IF the claim is based on population, yes they cover no doubt 95% of Verizon or ATT customers. The problem is they dont cover the places RV folks tend to visit. Great coverage of cities is nigh on to useless to me. I want coverage in the middle of nowhere.

Then seeing Sprint ads "Our reliability IN NETWORK is within 1% of Verizion".

True. but why was this ad misleading... Their Network is also 1% of Verizons or was the last time I looked (Ok perhaps 10%) 100% In Network reliability is of no use if you are NOT in range of their network

The author did say that the Sprint network is probably the worst of the major networks.

Where I live and travel, Sprint works for me !

We have Boost and have no issues with coverage. Guess it depends on your location.

I also have a SAT phone and it's good anywhere (in the world) but it's not cheap and airtime is also expensive but it don't depend on cell towers for communications, it's all satellite based.

I have it 'just in case'.

I might add that when I subscribed to Boost (Sprint), I bought the Kyocera Hydro Reach phone for 30 bucks (new) and I did for a reason. The Hydro Reach is waterproof to 30 feet for 15 minutes which means I can drop it in the snow when I'm hunting and not worry. For 30 bucks, I don't worry.

I have to say that I leave the cell phone in the glovebox anyway. I'm not a yacker or a texter and I really don't see the need for the SAT phone or the cell phone except for emergencies.

I still use paper maps too.
