Any hints on using a regular router with a Ubiquiti Bullet?

My WifiRanger router wifi failed - still works with RJ45 patch cables. The Bullet still works and does a great job of pulling in weak wifi.

Anywho, I'd like to replace the router with a WRT54G I have lying around.

Anybody done it? DD-WRT?

The Bullet is operating in router mode. I might be wrong, but I don't think there's any security between it and my router AP.

As an experiment, I'll change the password in the Bullet for my test network and see if it still logs in or if the PC is doing security.

there is AP Access Point Mode, Station Mode. this is not the same thing as Router, bridge mode.

You are in station mode, this is shown on the main tab on the bullet.

Your question was why can't i change security settings on the bullet, this is because your security has to match what the campground or wherever your getting your internet from. Your linksys is what YOU connect to, and is in Access Point mode. here is where you can configure your security settings.

Why does anyone buy any of the WiFi Ranger products when cheaper, easier to operate systems are out there? Sorry, rhetorical question....I just don't get it.
What was cheaper or easier 5 years ago when I bought mine?

Dup.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

Just ran the test - changed one character in the network password in the Bullet. My PC reported that it was still connected to the linksys router but that there was no internet. Changed it back and the PC had internet again.

I'm convinced that the Bullet is doing network security with the access point.

Eureka!

It took some poking around but I eventually discovered that the wifiranger people had changed the default IP address of the Bullet from 192.168.1.20 to 192.168.250.20. Once I configured the Bullet per the video you linked, I was able to drop in the WRT54G (configured for static IP address 192.168.250.21) and access the whole shebang via wifi.

WooHoo!

Only really odd thing is that the Bullet won't let me set the radio button that enables wifi security. But it does it, because the remote network I'm using for test is secured with WPA2-PSK. Whatever - it works.

Now, once again, I can overpower other RV park wifi users and stream videos all day ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think I'll get myself one of these to play with. I lost my external WiFi antenna from ice sliding off the roof - sheered the plastic antenna clean off. New one is going on the crank up antenna mast. Do they work with any regular n-type antenna?

I am doing what you want to do. First set up the bullet using your computers ethernet port.

This link shows how to do that.

Setup static connection

Then configure the bullet as in this link.

Configure Bullet

Then reset your computer as per the first link. After you have an internet connection you just connect the Bullet to the same port on your router that the cable modem plugged into. Set your computer to use WIFI. No other changes should be needed.

be very careful when testing other configurations or you'll end up climbing on the roof to hold down the tiny button on your bullet to reset it to default
Thanks for the links - I'll check them out. Yes, exactly - I'm very concerned about bricking my Bullet.

Is your bullet a generic Ubiquity or a WiFiRanger version?

The generic Ubiquity should work with any modern router into the Internet port. If A WFR version there may be issues without the GO/GO2 etc.
I honestly don't know the answer to that. There was nothing on the exterior of the Bullet that said it was specific to the Ranger but it might have a special firmware load. This was from ancient times - pre Go/GO2 (5 years ago).

What is the wrt54g doing? Is that the part with the failed Wifi? I'm not familiar with a wifiranger.
My wifiRanger access point / router wifi failed. I want to replace that router with the linksys router so I can have wifi again.
