back up camera

have been looking at the Iball cameras but I can't figure for the life of me why they made the receiver screen so darn small. yes I know that it has to be cutting down the cost of the unit, but that doesn't help guys like me that have to bend over to see the little screen to use it. guess I will just have to hook up the way I have been doing for the last 50 years or so.
  • I have had this camera and this 7" monitor for over a year now and both have worked flawlessly. This is wired. I had trouble with wireless so went to wired. Great picture, monitor is mounted on my sun visor. Grand total of about $52.

Just ordered the wireless w/7" monitor.

    Sounds like it'll work.
  • I have a cheap wireless unit from walmart that has the small screen and license plate mounted camera. It works good for hooking up, but it is a small screen and has some interference in the signal/picture. I have been looking at cameras for the rear of the tt and have decided to go with a wifi camera. There are ones that can be viewed without an internet connection on any smart phone or tablet. Some can also be connected to a wifi network so you can log in from anywhere to view. You can even get ones that will pan and tilt controlled from your computer or smartphone, and have 2 way audio. I tried out the example that easyn has and you can mirror image both horizontally and vertically, pan, and tilt, scan, or view several preset positions that you can save. 4ucam has a basic license plate mounted wifi cam for around $100. View on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop. There is a short demo on youtube for 4ucam.
I would like to get the ones with pan/tilt. Our tt is parked in the grass next to the driveway, and I keep the shore power plugged in all the time, so if I used a camera with pan/tilt I could view our driveway, garage, and house on my phone or laptop from anywhere. Most of the cameras that I have seen have a motion sensor that can send you an email with pictures if any motion is detected.
To use as a backup camera, you will need to be sure that the camera you get can connect directly to your device without an internet connection, as most cannot.

Another option I have considered is a wired camera with the monitor that mounts onto the rear view mirror. Some of those have a fairly large screen. It would cover the compass/temperature display on my mirror though.
  • We are looking for a good quality wireless backup camera system for our 44 ft fifth wheel toy hauler on a 08 f450 long bed.

    Any opinions out there?
  • Backup camera's are not cheap... about $150 on amazon is the best price I've seen on a complete camera/monitor kit. It comes with a 7" monitor and color camera.
  • Has anyone herd of a backup camera that could be used with a android tablet ? even a wired one ? I like the idea of a backup camera as a safety device for people behind you and than for hooking up your trailers.

I just Google it and found some things on a backup cameras , have any of you done this ? thanks, Jay
  • I will never buy another vehicle without an integrated back up camera.
My truck doesn't have one, our Subaru does. It's better than sliced bread.
It's good to see that many/most the newer trucks we buy to tow with come with them.

I never thought I would like a rear view camera but my 2010 F150 came with one. This is the cat's meow...

My center console screen is at least 7-inches and camera view comes up when I go into reverse. The view has feet markers with increasing beep alarms if something is in the path.

You can easily see the rear bumper in these two google photos

This camera is installed in the FORD OVAL EMBLEM on the rear tail gate. It is prone to pickup additional light source and may flare up the screen. The best feature is you can see the ball mount in the screen and watch it go under the trailer hitch on the first try... Don't know how I have lived without this all these years...

  • Gave up on the little bitty monitor. My rear view safety monitor is 7" - easy to see what's behind with a quick glance rather than a squint and focus.
