HDMI is best for sending video and audio from your laptop computer to your TV as other contributors have noted. My Windows 7 Home Premium notebook computer immediately adjusts its video whenever I connect it to an active HDMI jack on my HD-TV.
If you want to record audio from your TV, and it has audio output jacks as most TV sets do, you can get a cable with two RCA audio plugs on one end and a 1/8" stereo plug on the other end. Connect that cable between the audio output jacks on the TV and the audio INPUT jack on your laptop. If your version of Windows has the software to record audio, then you're already in business. Otherwise you can find free audio recording software downloads by doing a Google search.
