BSOD with smiley face

Two or three times a week I will get the BSOD with a smiley face and the following message: System Thread Exception Not Handled; atikmdag.sys, and that it will restart, which it does. I tried a few 'fixes' suggested online but to no avail. Any suggestions?
  • BSOD are commonly caused by incompatible or corrupt hardware drivers. Never heard of the smiley except when the browser crashes.
  • Thanks for the tips. I'll let you know if any of them work. It may take a while, as last time I thought I had it solved it occurred again after a couple of weeks.
  • atikmdag.sys is the driver for your graphics card.

You might want to find out what model graphics card you have and go to amd.com to see if there is an updated driver for your OS.
  • While on web pages. No, I have not installed any after-market drivers.
  • Is this while on web pages
    Or
    while streaming video
    Or
    Watching DVD
    Or
    online gaming ?

Threading exception is a processing problem, and could indicate a cpu or graphic display processing problem

There are free utilities, that can display processor core temperatures and load
