Carry out dish

We just got back from a big trip to
America, even spent 6 weeks in Florida. I bought a carry out dish and Direct TV receiver. All worked fine down in the lower 48 but not locking in up here I am guessing it is too small for 60 degrees North?
  • From what I've read, apparently the Dish western arc satellites are generally easier to "see" from Alaska than the DirecTV birds. I understand both use a larger dish there though, than those typically used in the lower 48.

I suspect, as you and others have alluded to, that the dish will not get close enough to the nap of the earth. Having worked with the Army systems as far north as Fairbanks and Greely, I know the shots are very low. A med rock or tree/shrub could cause you problems. I am not sure about the domeses but the higher you can get a non-dome dish the more likely you are to connect.

It could have gone to Alaska/Canada - 6 of 1, half a dozen the other ???

  • Lots of friends have traveled to Alaska and used Directv. They bought a larger dish there and it worked in most places not all.
  • One thing a lot of the satellite enabled gear we have down here says is that it is good in the "lower 48 states only." My Sirius is that way. If I go to Alaska it won't work or so it says.
