- dkilleyExplorerI had same issue recently and found Windows 10 was being forced to do upgrade in the background...and it could not upgrade due to internet too slow...so it kept working and working...I had to get professional to do upgrade and had them shut off the auto updates.Hope this helps.
- DKeanExplorerThanks for your reply. Can we turn off automatic up dates?
- kerrlakeRooExplorerAm not a windows guru, but the most basic first steps normally are from your browser, clear the cookies and browsing data,
then go into windows and tap the windows key and enter into disk cleanup, likely you want to empty the recycle bin, temporary internet fles and then click clean up.
After that you may want to restart and again open windows and find optimize or defrag, that may take a while to run depending on if you had it set to run automatically previously.
After it finishes restart and see if the issue has improved.
If you go to your google or chrome browser you should be able to search based on "how do I speed up my computer"
The description there may be easier than mine. Good luck - coolmom42Explorer IILikely it is running a big update package in the background. Just give it a while, like a few hours. If you haven't booted it up in several days, that could be the reason the update is so big and takes so long.
With Win7, it tells you when the updates are downloading and when they are installing. Win10 just does it all in the background.
I don't recommend you turn off the updates. Quite often they are security patches, and a system that has not been updated in a long time is vulnerable to viruses/malware.
You can google how to "turn off updates in Windows 10" and find good instructions. What you can do is turn them off when you are on limited data or time, and then turn the updates back on at a convenient time. The updates then should start downloading and installing when you connect to the internet. Just DON'T leave it off indefinitely.
A lot of people don't like Win10 but it is by far the most smoothly operating system ever from Microsoft. However, the developers didn't take into consideration that not everyone has unlimited fast data.
If the sluggish behavior continues, reboot and see if that helps. - BobKrogstieExplorer

Ask Google and you'll get 2 or 3 different ways to disable automatic updates. - LexxExplorerYou might want to check if you have a virus. Download free Malwarebytes, reboot into safe mode, and run the scan.

That and load CCleaner on your desktop. It's freeware on CNet and File Hippo. Run it daily, gets rid of all the junk you don't need. - mike-sExplorer
- tinstartrvlrExplorerx2 on the Windows update and slow internet connection thing. Happens to me often. Since I use a mifi device and cellular, if it really gets bogged down I take the laptop and go for a drive, closer to a cell tower which seems to speed things up.
If all the other suggestions fail, you can go into Settings, Update/Security, find the Recovery option, and "reset this computer" but use the setting that saves all your files. That worked nicely for me a couple times. - IroverExplorerWith Windows you can use Disk Cleanup and Defragment and Optimize Drives! This also helps
