Danged computer has one of those USB sound adapters which helps but I need clearer sound especially in speech frequencies. I have a small 15 watt Lepai 12 volt amplifier with bass and treble knobs.I really am leery of buying something that once-again will not work. An honest USB equalizer amplifier would be nice to hoot up the 800-3000 frequency range but what speakers to use. My toad is diwn to cubic inch packing space limitation.Watch a movie with no subtitle option and miss 60% of speech. No stinky bueno.

Check out Zvox. They have a new sound bar for us hard of hearing folks. I bought one for my TV and now listen at less than half the volume I used to. Love it!

In Windows at least since Vista there's an option to boost the vocal range of audio. Can't recall exactly where, I'm not at a computer right now.Might help some.

I don't know what computer or OS you are using, or for that matter what software you are using to listen/watch, but I note that iTunes has a built-in equalizer with a number of presets as well as sliders for boosting particular frequencies. You will find this under the "window" menu.And last I looked, iTunes itself is free for both Mac and Windows.

Mexiare you using VLC media player ? your laptop ? its free (video lan player)open VLC then press Crtl Ean equalizer menu will open and you can adjust complete sound range settings to your liking

If your laptop has Bluetooth have you considered a Bluetooth speaker or headset? Often those can be had for not a lot of money. And with the apps mentioned above you have some flexibility. USB Bluetooth dongle can be used if you don't

I have a pair of Logitech powered speakers that are about 3" wide and 6" tall. I use them with the kitchen TV (worst speakers ever). For small speakers they work very well.

Not ALL laptops have bad sound systems. It sound is important look for a laptop that advertises a "brand name" sound system. My laptop sounds amazingly good. I regularly listen to music on it.

Not complete true ! I am no audiophile, but the speakers on my HP (Beats) are well above "average".

it keeps your settings
and will use that for all videos, you play with VLC

it won't do anything IF you open the movie in windows media player

just right click your video and choose open with vlc

or open vlc and then navigate to the video you want to play

when browsing files, IF your video title displays the vlc ICON
then vlc is the default program for playing that file

just double click to automatically open in vlc

Jeez! Thanks! The laptop had nothing but a dialogue box popped up saying I could download the program. 27MB. I did it. Now there is a little orange and white traffic come icon in the bottom screen tray. I cranked up the 1KHz and 3KHz equalizer to max, and increased volume to max as well. Now when I play a movie from an external hard-drive, does this VLC automatically start and boost-equalize?

External amplified Better
JBL Amplified Monitors with an 8 band Graphic Equlizer between computer and speakers... Professional grade.

For more info contact Heil Sound. I don't think bob sells Computer speakers, but he sells some top quality professional Mics and accessories, and he gives decent advice.

No, but it will cost you !

To find a laptop with decent sound get one that has a "brand name" associated with the sound system. My HP laptop has a "Beats" sound system. I don't know what they did, but it is much better than your average laptop sound system.

I got two of the DELL AC511 Monitor soundbar USB speakers. (AMAZON)

They run off the USB port on my Dell 24-inch monitors...

Each Dell monitor is fed by HDMI port from my laptop.

I can control the audio level from my external DELL keyboard...

Sounds great for around $20

The soundbar didn't line up with the slots for soundbar speakers on my monitors but using VELCO stick-on strips worked just fine...
