Directv setup ???

I am gaining some experience with satellite tv but still have questions. I am putting together a portable system for my camper.

I have been given a Winegard TR02077 tripod with a Directv dish which measures 18" wide and 20" high. The LNB is the same as I have on my stationary system, a Dual LNB, model ZKF-52N. My receiver is a 311.

When doing the satellite setup there is a host of 18x20 dishes. I didn't have a clue which one to use. The existing elevation setup at the dish was set at 45 degrees (same as my 18" round dish). So for the hell of it I set it up for an 18" round and it works. Deeper in the setup programing there is an error message pertaining to a satellite that is not there, I ignored it, hit continue and the system is working.

My question is do I need to change the setup to a 18x20 dish and if so how do I select the correct one? And remember, it seems to working just fine now.
  • If your using this receiver in the house and take it out to the RV, and everything is the same both in the house and in the RV, then no. You do not have to change anything. The receiver will remember the last antenna it was set for, so all you should have to do is set the dish, align it correctly and connect. At some point you will want to go to setup and look at the signal strength, but basically that's it.
  • Some clarification, please! Your title is "direcTV setup" but you mention a Dish Network 311 receiver and a dual LNB which DirecTV never used.
  • IF it works, your good to go. A round dish will only provide access to one satellite. An oval will allow you to access two or more at the same time. So you probably dont have hi-def and with Directv you can receive all the programing for non-hi-def on one satellite.
  • Don the only difference is the dish size. The house dish is a 18" round, the camper dish is a 18x20. I will be taking the receiver from the house to use in the camper.

Bill I apologize! I spent the past weekend helping my nephew while he dialed in his Dish system and had the 311 receiver burned in my brain.

The Directv receiver I have is a D12-700. This is , as I'm sure you know, a SD receiver. But, the lnb I mentioned is mounted on both the house dish and the portable dish. The tag says - Dual LNB - Model ZKF-G52N on both dishes.

on edit - I see in my original post that I left out a letter in the lnb model number, a G. I promise I haven't been drinking, yet!! lol
  • OK, so all you need is a single LNB and that can be round or oval but oval is of no additional help. Dual LNB refers to the number of outputs available from that single LNB. Point the antenna to the 101 satellite and you will get all of the DirecTV programming buy very likely not the Networks (unless you also have DNS).
  • Thanks for the explanation Bill and Hershey. I had no idea why there were different shapes of the dishes. And very glad I will be able to use the freebie Winegard tripod with the Directv oval dish.
