Garmin RV vs Semi?

Trying to determine which unit to purchase. Retiring soon and will be on the road for a few months at a time, so would like to know which is preferred. I heard the unit for semi's has a haz mat feature to allow you to bypass routes that prohibit propane tanks, but the RV unit has perks like campgrounds, etc. Thoughts?
  • I'll tell you this, I have owned both the RV760LMT and still own a Dezl 760. Forget about hazardous routing on either unit. We routinely travel to Philly and go down I-70 to hit I-95. Both units will try to route me via downtown Baltimore and through the tunnels (No propane allowed) no matter what the settings. I like the Dezl because of the customization dashboards but when I travel that route, I switch to car mode. Besides that, we stay at the Philly KOA and both units try to route me all around the area (45 minutes extra) even though the routes are approved for RV's. Look at your maps, know your route. For me, GPS is nothing more that a trip minder, how long, how far, time to there, etc.
  • I just purchased the BC-30 backup camera.. and I am still using my Garmin 2597 GPS... may go for a local road trip to try it out...SOON.
  • I do have the RV model and unfortunately Garmin did cut corners and used the Truck software on the RV model as well. All the truck limitations are present on RV mode. Several requests have already been made for Garmin to create a RV mode. So far, nothing. Once you take this limitation into account and adapt your route then it is a very good unit.
  • If I were buying a new GPS I would avoid the "Semi" ones.

We have the Nuvi 465T which has truck routing or auto routing to choose from. Sounds fine but you find that when you create a route in Basecamp and transfer it to the Nuvi there are problems. If you have it set to "Truck" it will change the route so as to stay off "No Trucks" roads. That can create a real headache.
  • This has been a popular subject so search this Forum for `gps' and read on and on. You could also search the results for the model you are interested in.
  • I am investigating this very issue..

the RV 660 or the Truck 770.

personally I do not need the campground data.

but the warnings of hazard and bridge/tunnel and hard turns and steep down hills is a Big Plus for me. so I am leaning to the New 770 with the backup camera...

I have a Garmin 2597 for 3 years now... very happy with it.
but New to pulling a 30 foot trailer (new to me). and the backup camera may need the bigger screen of 7 inches.

so I will keep an Eye on your thread for opinions.
