Google Calendar Sync

For the past couple of years I have been syncing my Outlook calendar with the Android calendar on my phone and tablets, using Google Calendar as the go-between.

Today I received this from Google:

"Almost two years ago, we announced that we ended support for Google Calendar Sync. Starting on August 1, 2014, this app will no longer sync events between your Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar.

"You can continue to access all of your Google Calendar events at calendar.google.com or on your mobile devices. Follow these instructions to uninstall Google Calendar Sync from your computer."

So Google no longer will play nice with Microsoft - bummer.

So....has anyone come up with an easy, effective replacement for Google Calendar Sync? And hopefully free?

It took awhile but I figured how to sync Outlook 2003 calendar and contacts on my PC with my wife's iPad and my android phone.

First one must establish an account with Outlook.com and sync it with the Outlook on your computer. Now your desktop calendar and contacts are mirrored in the Outlook.com cloud. The process is described here:

http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/olc-hotmail/sync-calendar-contacts-using-outlook-com/

Then it is easy to create an Outook.com account on the iPad and synch with Outlook.com calendar and contacts.

It is a little harder to synch Outlook.com with the android phone. Here is the process.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/outlook/to-go

The contacts are not as functional on Outlook.com or the iPad or android as on the PC. For example, categories are not carried over and I don't think you can edit the contacts on the phone

It is odd that Google drove me to a competitor by withdrawing support for syncing my PC Outlook calendar with its calendar. I suppose they have a reason but it escapes me.

There is a Google sync add-on for Mozilla Thunderbird's calendar add on called Lightening (all free) that will sync that calendar to Google calendar. The only thing you can't do is sync tasks - though there is also an add on for that but it did not work very well. It means giving up on Outlook.

Google Calendar Sync for Outlook has not been available for download for some time. (I tried two or so years ago to get it and couldn't.) Interesting that they are now pulling the plug so that those who had it cannot use it any longer. This has been part of the dispute between Google and MS and the users are the ones who lose out.

"you'll want to take a look at CompanionLink. they specialize in syncing data across platforms. i use it to sync my MS outlook calendar to my iPhone and it uses your google calendar as the go-between. it works."

For $50 it had better work!

I should have clarified that I'm using Outlook 2003 on a PC.

Thanks for the suggestions.

In this case it's Exchange (Outlook) Active Sync with your employer. talk to your IT people. I get my work email, contacts, and calendar on my Galaxy Android devices after turning on encryption and allowing my employers policies. It all depends on how they're set up.

Would need to know more about your Outlook account. Are we talking Outlook.com (the modern day Hotmail) or Outlook as in Active Sync Exchange client account???

Dick,

How is Entourage, an email client for Mac, going to help sync Outlook and Google Calendars?

I have Outlook at work and use GCS to sync my work annd personal calendars so that my one life is in one place AND so my wife can see my entire schedule. I don't use Apple products. I too am looking for a solution.
