GPS freezes

We have a RVND 7725 Rand McNally GPS, using it for the last couple of years, maps updated regularly, lately it locks up (freezes) randomly, unfortunately when we need it most sometimes. Shutting it down and restarting may or not restore it.

Any thoughts here, or is this due to impending complete failure?

  • I like the Rand McNally better then the Garmins we have. The Garmins have misled me a couple times. Not bad but it did. Once took me down a pole line road.
I would contact Rand McNally before buying a new one.
  • Thanks to all for the replies, DW says she did the updates, did a clean up, will try a reset. We had a Garmin previously and I believe we used the Garmin Express? feature with it, dont think it works with this. If necessary to replace this unit, any recommendations?

Now this is a better answer than just go out and buy a new one. If buying a new one every couple of years is "the answer" maybe you should buy a new "other brand" one. :)
  • lbrjet has point about cleaning out your history. Not only what is inside but what is on the Micros SD chip.

  • Have you done the updates?
Have you used the reset instead of just turning it off?
    Have you called Rand McNally?
  • Time for a new one. I have some GPS' that are over 20 years old - remember the original Garmin 45s? Most of them have some sort of malfunction around five years. They're cheaper now and the screens are larger, buy a new one.

On your computer, see if your current GPS is new enough to work with Garmin Express. This allows your saved locations to be transferred to your new GPS very easily. If you have any problem in doing it, call Garmin and they'll walk you through it while on the phone.

Another feature of Garmin Express is keeping the saved locations the same in all of your GPS' that are new enough to use this feature. I have three GPS' that I'm actively using. One in the MH, one in the toad and one that's a back-up. When I get home from trips, I hook them up (one at a time) and Express will transfer or add locations from one GPS to the others so that all saved locations are in each GPS.

  • Time for a new one. My Garmin locks up maybe a couple times/year.
