Correct. Online map apps (Waze, Google Maps, MapQuest, Inrix, Scout) require a data connection for maps and routing.

Offline map apps (Sygic, Copilot, TomTom, HERE) do not require a data connection for maps and routing.

Hybrid map apps are generally online unless the user specifically downloads the offline content and then there are some offline capabilities (Google Maps, Scout).

Yes Google is good but if you have to take your phone out of your pocket every time you hear you have a change in routing or whatever it's more like texting while driving and illegal in most States.

They make mounts for your cell phone that are identical to a mount for a GPS so there's no need to take the phone out of your pocket. Second, no you don't need bars for a smartphone GPS app to work. Both the copilot and Sygic apps store Maps offline and do not need a data connection to operate. The only thing you need a data connection for is the traffic content and that is no different than the GPS.

Cell phones do not need "bars" as they have their own built in GPS....exactly the same as a stand alone GPS. There is also no reason to have a phone in your pocket when using it as a GPS. You simply place it on your dash or windshield exactly as you would with a stand alone GPS. They really are exactly the same with the advantage of increased accuracy.

If you want RV specific routing and road restrictions your only option is CoPilot or Sygic. CoPilot has an add in called ActiveTraffic for an additional charge but I would not use the app without it. ActiveTraffic gives you a feature called ActiveRoutes that uses Inrix traffic to make the ETA and route selection very good. Without ActiveRoutes it isn't very good.

The TomTom app is very good but no RV specific routing. If you aren't looking for all of the PND features in an app then Google Maps is great.

Google Maps or WAZE. Google now owns WAZE and they are working to make the best of both complement each other.

Waze and Copilot RV. I also have Allstays, Gas Buddy and iExit.

If you put Waze on a cell enable tablet instead of your phone, most of the privacy issues are moot. I did this on an Android phone that wasn't connected to the same Google account as my phone.

You should read up on all the privacy concerns with Waze. You might not be so quick to use it.
