Help

Sorry, but I'm not really a computer whiz. My laptop has recently started doing something different. Not sure why. I have Windows XP.
When I click on the windows icon to shut the computer down, the menu
comes up listing programs etc, but now there is also the icon for my
user name up at the top. It won't let me select shut down, or anything else for that matter. I have to click my icon and it brings up my
user account stuff. How can I get rid of this?
  • It sounds like you have something set for the computer to "log off" rather than shut down. Go into your control panel and check all of the settings - particularly under Users.

Can you shut down directly if you use CTRL-ALT-DEL?

  • First, hold down Windows Key+R and in RUN type or copy and paste gpedit.msc and ENTER. Check to make sure "Remove and Prevent Access to the Shut Down, Restart, ...is not "Enabled" in Local Group Policy Editor under User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar. If so, double click and set to "Disable" or "Not configured".
