hooking up Direct TV with a MotoSat Dish

Thanks to advice from bill.satellite and others. I did take the rig out today with the old RCA receiver and was able to lock onto satellite 101W, transponder 22 with a top peak of 95. Great signal strength.

However, when I then hooked it up to the new Direct TV receiver, it couldn't acquire the satellite and gave me warning number 771. And it recorded no signal strength on any transponder, all zeros.

Then, I just saw a post that said I need to select the proper dish with the new Direct TV receiver, so I'll try that tomorrow. I had asked the Direct TV rep if I needed to do that and he just said "no, it works with any size and shape dish." That didn't make sense to me.
Thanks

That is excellent advice. The RF Mogul folks are the prior owners of MotoSAT so the info is accurate.

I think I'm almost there with using my MotoSat satellite dish to watch Direct TV, using two receivers. As Bill.satellite and others have said, you can use the old RCA receiver to located the Direct TV satellite and then switch over to the new Direct TV receiver to watch it. There are a few kinks to work out, however, that I am working through.

I was able to program the second receiver with the satellite set-up information (18 inch round dish, multi-switch function). I had a signal splitter going to BOTH receivers and every 6 seconds, the picture would go off, then back on in 6 seconds. I finally realized, I had to completely take the coaxial connections off the first RCA box as I had two boxes on at once and I think they were fighting each other. So after disconnected the first RCA receiver once the second box is up and running, after 60 seconds of so, the satellite dish automatically retracted. I did this about 4 times and always go the same result.

I was able to get hold of a nice gentleman at RF Mogul, who actually wrote the manual for the MotoSat Executive dish system. He said I need to re-program the control box, using the old RCA receiver. Get into the menu and at some place, there is section on "Stowing of dish" He said I should answer the following: 1) Stow on Power Off, should be "NO" 2) Loss of power should be changed to "NO" and 3) Should the dish be stowed with loss of AC and that should say "Stay Up." Of course, these were all good safety features to prevent you from driving away with the dish up, so I have to take precautions on this.
Hope it works. I'll try tomorrow. RF Mogul does make a new control box that will replace all this, priced at $ 895 and it uses the old satellite dish.

HI there. I'm glad I don't have an H25 receiver. That sounds worse. I have a D12-500. That's the new receiver.

OK, so you need to get into the setup menu on the D12 as well once you have the MotoSAT locked on and have a confirmed signal. You will want to verify that the receiver is set to 18" round antenna type and multi-switch before moving on. Then go to Signal Strength and Signal Meter to see if you have a single on 101 transponder 1. If so, you will need to click all of the Continue buttons until you end the setup routine. If not, you may have a bad A/B switch/connection so you can try moving the cable from the old receiver to the new.

What model # is your new DTV receiver. Hopefully, it's not an H25!
