How do you all secure your carry out sat antennas

How do you all secure your carry out satellite antennas? I use a Tailgater with a 50ft cable, currently unsecured. I'm afraid my luck will run out one day and someone will take a liking to it and carry it off. Any suggestions? We watch TV at night and it would'nt take much for someone to unhook it and be gone before we could catch them.

I never had a problem in 3 years. I know some folks want security, if so go the steal cable route.

I bought 30 ft of chain and two padlocks for my Winegard X2 and secure it to something on my 5er - the ladder, landing gear, etc.

I agree about not being able to stop someone who really wants it; I just want to stop the guy who walks by at 10 PM looking for something he can easily carry off. These things are bulky, but real light.

Actually, it is the receiver and a remote that is needed, not the just remote. Even though a receiver is necessary to use a dish, the dish itself is worth several hundreds to thousands of dollars. Then all the thief needs is a receiver to use the stolen dish.

What we're talking about are the small carryout satellite antennas that you'd use instead of a regular manually pointed satellite dish.

Most of these are designed to work with any satellite receiver although some are specifically made for a certain satellite provider (DISH, DTV, etc.)
Thats exactly what I'm eluding to also. It has a remote control that allows you to program the dish to find the satellite and that combination is unique to the pair. In other words, you could steal the satellite cube or dish but you wouldn't be able to program it to find a satellite without the remote.

I've got a Winegard Carryout G2 which can go on two places (front and back) on the roof of my RV. I use a telescoping ladder to put it in place. Someone would have to pull on the cables to get it off and they had better be a good catch to not damage the unit.

I have an old 18" round dish which mounts to a base made of scrap lumber. If you have storage space perhaps you could get a spare dish in case of theft. Less than $50.

Depending upon the CG and/or distance I may throw a light chain on it. I also bought a cable $29 that alerts when the cable is disconnected from the satellite cube. Of course if I am not inside the RV when that happens it does no good but in the middle of the night it would be a rude awakening. But as others would note, it is rare to see someone walking through a CG with a cube or tripod in a manner that is truly suspicious.

Strange as it may seem,,, I do not often hear of those goign walkabout without their owner's attached.

That said.... I keep thinking of that scene in,,, I think Goldfinger,, where James and the Young lady are in the forest and the bad guys are trying to break into James' car which has a "Burglar Protected" sign on the door window.

There is a loud explosion (off screen) and James says to the young lady, "Do you have a car?, Mine is out of commission." or some such line (I only remember he ask about here car with a comment).

Of course, that kind of security,, though effective at stopping their NEXT attempt, is both illegal and tends to damage your tailgater.

I bought heavy 5/8 security cable from Home Depot. I think cable is harder to cut than chain with bolt cutter. With some good padlocks

I use a tree, picknic table stabilizer jack or what ever I can wrap the cable around. Even with all that, I don't leave the Tailgater out when I leave the campsite..
