irfanview will open a gif file identified that has a jpg extension

but the point i was making,
is that notepad and other MS programs will not open data files with oddball extensions
MS programs will only open files that are associated with it, no matter what the embedded data header says
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !

Renaming an image file extension is not going to change how the browser interprets and displays the image itself. The browser is reading the embedded image type info. So if .map is not a valid image type, the browser will not display it.

Whereas changing the file extension does nothing for how the browser displays an image, it can be a useful trick on the server end of a website. For example, our forum servers only allow signature photos in either .jpg or .gif. Using a .png file will cause an error message. However, if you change the .png extension to .jpg, the forum servers will allow it though its still a .png image as far as the browser is concerned.

I will try to hook up the camera/dvr/gps direct to the computer USB port, but that did not work at all with my Windows 64 system.Maybe I need to try an older computer with Windows XP.
Thank you all for your reply's.

I viewed them on my win 8 system. might be 32 however.

why do you think the ".map" file is a google file
does your driver cam/dvr have an Android operating system ?

file extension is ".map"
that does not mean it is a pictorial map page
it might be only a text file containing location data

make a copy of the file
use 'rename' and change copy extension
change to jpg or gif or bmp etc.. AMBA0031.jpg
the see if ms paint or other image program will open it

try open with notepad , see if its a text data file

I'll have to try that myself. I pulled my SD card and got nothing when put it in my card reader so don't think I could even rename it, but pulled the camera/card out of vehicle and worked fine when I plugged it into the computer with supplied USB cord.

Drag and drop the .map file into your text editor. What does it look like?

The dash camera records a video file like AMBA0031.MOV that I can replay
with like Windows media player,no problem.
But the GPS inside the camera also records an AMBA0031.MAP file that would show the real map location as you drive along together with the video.Hope that makes sense.

I copy the whole google map page with ALT-PRINT SCREEN keys which saves to memory.. Then open up good ole MS PAINT and paste into it. Then crop out what I don't want and save the new selection. Then I can open up in almost anything to print or view etc...

Is this Google Map text data? You should be able to view the file contents in any text editor. Or try mapping the data using gpsvisualizer.com.
