We are planning on replacing our failing GPS with an I-PAD Any sugestions-I understand the I-Pad has GPS built in-Thanks Rich

And again, 1 more time. I bought the IPAD 3, and in the apps there is something called Rand McNally, I put that on the IPAD, cost for the app is $100.00. This comes with free map up grades for life. In the windows world, you keep buying and paying for upgrades, Apple you do not. Once loaded the Rand McNally, now you DO NOT need Internet for it to run. I just put in the route, then close the cover on it and it speaks to me telling me where to turn, do not need to look at it. It does not need to be hooked up to power, because it lasts for almost 10 hours, and by that time we are at the next campground. Put it on charge and by next morning, ready to go again. With the IPAD, I can go on line, as I am doing now, the GPS you can not go on line.
To me it is so much better. I still have my laptop, but the IPAD is starting to be used more and more.

I use my iPad (WiFi/4G) with CoPilot for navigation, but have not enabled the iPad's AT&T data plan. So it works fine as a GPS. However, as Fizz said, the WiFi-only iPads do not have built-in GPS.

These iPad threads are always kinda funny . . . so much disinformation, particularly from non-iPad owners. On the other hand, there are some iPad-ers who think it's the Holy Grail.

I think the most interesting thing I got out of this thread is that some of you drive AND navigate at the same time. Not for me. Too much stuff can happen on the road, particularly considering that every GPS I've used has had its faults. DW and I divide these tasks while we're traveling.

Finally, another advantage of using an iPad (or any large tablet) is the LARGE screen & multi-functionality. (As you age, the former becomes more important as each year passes.) Anyway, while dedicated GPSs are adding more and more capabilities (campground searches, logging, etc), nothing beats having a tablet with a library of THOUSANDS of apps.

You do need to buy the high end one that can subscribe, just don't have to.
In other words GPS does not come with the WiFi only models.

I have several gps apps already on my iPad and a great one came installed in the Winnebago Era.
I'm looking for a travel journal/log where I can enter info...notes...photos. I use tripit for other traveling, but I'd like an app or program set up for touring on the road.

I could be wrong but if you plan to use your IPad as a GPS you will Ned the premium pad version which is a 3 or 4 G units. That being said there is a monthly data fee and the unit costs more.phone are used because they are 3 and 4 g and can access the Internet from anywhere there is a signal. Buying a new GPS would be cheaper that the IPad route. Smart phone would be a different issue.

Tom Tom app for iPad is great. Easy to use, pre planning works great, in app address lookup, restaurant, fuel stations grocery stores etc are easy to use. Any smartphone photo with geocaching enabled can be used as a destination. My friends can send me a pic of their campsite and I can tap the pic and have Tom Tom navigate to it.

Anyone using an iPad app as a travel journal? I want to be able to customize something that already has a basic format by adding specific trip info... add notes and photos...keep track of stuff.
I already have tripadvisor and tripit...but they Re not really what I want as a journal.
Thoughts?

I'm still in the dedicated GPS camp for my primary but we have added the Free version of Copilot to my wife's iPad for checking routes and planning. Also gives a second opinion on routes. She use to juggle paper maps to verify GPS routs or find things along the way and it took forever to find us on the map to start looking, now it comes up and says where we are and she can start immediately. With all North America downloaded off free WiFi we don't use any data while using it.

Since this is about iPads does anyone know if there is an app that can be used as a travel log? Where you have been, miles traveled, and fuel information and I like to attach photos sometimes. I keep a annual log and then print and file it. I had to use a log one time to show where I was at or where I was not at.

There are also various mobile mounts available for iPads. The new iPad Mini makes a nice dash mounted GPS

I to have a I-pad, the wife put a maps--app on it. Wow what a app.i zoom down to stree level, and see the front door wow nice -----happy-camping

I have the iPad and purchased Navigon by Garmin for about $40.00 and I am still on the learning curve. I did use it for a short drive from Quartzsite to Fresno area and I did like what I saw. Still working on where and how to mount and secure it as it belongs to the DW.
I do not think it uses data when using the GPS because it worked where there were no signals.
