Ideaworks Long Distance Wifi Antenna - It Works!

Our RV park has Wifi that is only available within about 100 ft. of the office. A local retailer was advertising this Ideaworks antenna for $29.99 so I thought I'd give it a try and it actually works.

We went from no bars signal strength to 4 bars at our site which is close to 800 ft. away from the office. What a great improvement! It may not work for everyone but it sure helped with our situation.

We have no "line of sight" to the office. Lots of trees and RV's between us and the office so I really didn't think it would work. Nice surprise!

It says it is USB powered so I'm assuming it's the Wi-Fi USB Dongle device. Very nice but of lmited use to folks like me.

I use a linksys WGA-54G (Wireless Game Adapater) which I suspect is no longer made.. The early Game Systems did not have Wi-Fi but did have a LAN jack.. This is for them.. Newer systems have WI-FI.

The device looks to my house network like a Cable Modem. and works much the same way only with park Wi-Fi instead of cable.

If you watch www.amateurlogic.tv episode 3 they tell how to make a "Cantenna" type device out of one to improve gain.

I did NOT modify the Linksys Antenna

but I did put a can over it as George does in the video.

    Worked great

I also used a paper and foil parabolic reflector on it (NOTE both these mods work with any Wi-Fi device that has an antenna that sticks up like a finger)

You can find that one by googling: Open Roads RV Wi-FI Booster

You simply print out the PDF (Use card stock) cut it out, cover one piece with aluminum foil, assemble it and drop it over the "Finger" mentioned above.

NOT quite as good as George's cantenna but very close, and very inexpensive as well.
  • Glad to hear that this works. What do you do when you plug this in - does it act as a network repeater/booster so that other wifi devices that you have can access the increased signal - such as a tablet or other laptop? Or is it just an antenna for that one laptop plugged into it?
