Need Tailgater help

I am having issues getting a tailgater to work in some locations. Was camping in NW Georgia and a camper had one in what looked like a "no way he's gonna get reception" situation under some trees. He said he had everything and told me that he "aims" the handle. Anyone ever heard of this? I thought you just put it out and it did the rest.

Seems to be a number to choose from. I have an apple iphone. Can someone tell me the best?
  • My Dish Tailgater works with the handle pointed in any direction. But I do have a second connector on my MH and bring 50 feet of coax with me so that I can get the antenna out from under the trees I like to park under.
  • There is a dish app for smart phones that will show the satellites and tell you which way to point and if you have a clear shot at them, helppps a lot.
  • I have tried the handle in different directions and it does not seem to matter which. I pulled the cover off mine a couple times to watch it. When you select the location and click SCAN, the dish begins rotating a full 360 degrees, scanning in all directions. Then it settles back into a general southerly direction homing in on the sats. Once it stops rotating it begins a series of incremental up/down and side to side movements, apparently finding the strongest signal for each sat.
  • Like others have said point it to the north but I also have found that a compass is useful when checking for a clear view for the satellites.

  • Dish help line told me to point the handle North as that is the 'back'. The Satellites are in the South-West about 40-45 degrees up (or so) (if you've ever positioned one on a tripod before.) So the Tailgater needs the same clear skies (40-45 degrees up and SW direction with handle facing Northward). On your receiver, be sure to always run the "check". Also, double check your connections, and always use the same coax cable. I switch cables (inside the camper, from the wall to the receiver) and it positioned the Tailgater OK, but the signal would not work. After I switched back to my original coax, it worked fine again.
  • The Tailgater handle would be positioned to North or thereabouts depending on location in the U.S. The front would then be pointed to the South where the dish can pick up satelites.
