real slow ACER netbook

Dang, that is some crazy cpu usage! Did chrome have some really busy tabs open?

25-50% still sounds awfully high to me. On my small computers, I notice slowness when they getto 20%, and they usually run below that, say 5-18%. According to Task Manager, which I do not completely trust.

Win 7 boots. First thing check cpu usage under task manager and it you would see it climb from almost 0 to 100% and stay. All the squares in task manager would turn green and stay there.
One time after booting up, saw something and Chrome on the screen and then disappeared. Delete chrome and dropped to the 25-50.

I agree that's too high but the laptop is seldom used and now does what I want. I will be chasing more on it later.

Try using google chrome, and stop ussing internet explorer. 100 percent difference

I spent most of the day yesterday trying to get a laptop that we don't use much and could hardly use yesterday.

Older laptop but came with win7 and 2GB processor. Task manger showed most the time at CPU at 98-100% and using only task manager at the time.

Yes, I know about start up times, defrag, antivirus, malware, etc.
Tried everything.

Tried changing hompepage on IE, couldn't change it.

Don't know how it happened, but Chrome was running in background, deleted it and CPU dropped to 25-50%, still too high but ran fine.

Since Win7 and AVG on home pc, I've have no problems with IE.

I'm pretty ignorant, but that sounds like a windows problem to me. I'd try rebooting it like 5 or 6 times. I think windows does extra cleanup every few restarts.

I put the battery in this afternoon and rebooted it and it was better for about an hour than it started to act up and it would not shut down so I remove the battery to get to shut down. I don't need it so I will have it looked at after we get done camping this fall.

I have two circa 2009 laptops, a dual core and a Celeron both with 4GB RAM. They are pretty much internet computers for the kids now, but they were frustratingly slow to the point of useless running Windows 7 on both. I picked up a 120GB SSD and installed Ubuntu on one. It's running great now. Boots under 15seconds. Web browsing, internet, movies, music, and document editing are all great now, all for $45. I will probably get another SSD and install Ubuntu on the other laptop.

The registry cleaner fixed my Acer for about an hour... then it got slow again. I ran the cleaner again and it found new stuff. So i am thinking there is some sort of ongoing problem.

Is there anyone here who could advise me? Maybe I should start my own thread :). But I am mentioning this here isn case it is helpful to you, OP.

OP here, Thank You for all your help but the ACER froze up and wouldn't do anything, had to pull the battery to turn it off.
We got it free and used it a lot for over two years so I'm good with it, my son has a friend who works on computers so when I get back from my trips I will have him check it out. Jay

Chrome doesn't work on low-RAM computers, but I agree about not using IE! Firefox is great, free, and has more functionality than Chrome.

Shew, my experience with Firefox was less than stellar. Google Chrome user here 100%. I was a Firefox user until Google Chrome came and have since been a user of Chrome. Much faster in my experience, and I use to watch the data logs on my PC and Chrome was much leaner than Firefox at that time.

Best feature of both is being able to wipe all cookies after a browser is closed. Love that.

My experience on 3 diff laptops with 3 diff versions of windows (8.1, 7, and vista) was that ffox far outperformed chrome. YMMV, obviously :).
