You may just have a bad hard drive if it is old.

I would determine the size of hard drive needed and buy a solid state one. You can then load Windows.
The solid state hard drive will give you a huge increase in speed compared to an old HD.
Checkdsk is to try and repair an old disk but it is not worth the effort most of the time. Even a new hard drive that is not Solid State is cheap.
