"My Places" and "My Maps" are the same thing I believe. I use "My Maps" and noticed that if I load someone else's map, then I cannot delete their map from My Maps.
The tabs at the top of their screen show "Not Owned" and the not owned maps show in the ALL tab.
I'm not happy about it. But Google is still developing their map program.
