Safe gaurds when filling out Facebook registration

So, are you not David E Bishop from Eagle Rock CA who drives a 2002 Winni Adventurer? And you're worried about people finding out about you on Facebook? You don't think the world can see your info on this forum?

I registered with FB with a pseudonym. Only a few people (my kids mainly) know that that person on FB is really me.

Works for me. But, in practice, I post very seldom. Mostly I go to some RV pages on FB.

I opened up an FB page several years ago and then decided the security sucked. Closed it down.

Did the same for my wife so she could visit a few pages but not deal with "friending".

The best safe guard is to forget Facebook and other such social media. Never register to begin with.

I don't even like it when our distant family members who are registered post anything about me or my family.

Of course anyone using a computer puts their ID and personal information at risk by hackers, but why make it easier for the average user to ferret it out?

What’s the point. Just make your page private and there is no rule you have to accept anyone’s friend request. Sounds like a family problem not a Facebook problem. If your goal is to only view groups a fake name will probably work fine. Just don’t put your real name in those fields when you set it up.

If you just ignore the friend request the other parties don’t get notifications you are ignoring them. If you have these issues with certain family members do you think it will go over better when they find out you have a fake profile to ignore them.

Always be sure to use an alternate birthday - never your real birthday.
Facebook has measures that let you shut out anyone that you don't want to hear from. Bad family actors should not be a problem.

Normally when I register for sites I lie about my age. I always tell the exact same lie.. but this means anyone trying to use my public info.. Is in for a surprise.

Hello: Mr, Jones. this is deputy Nemo from Nowhere Sheriff's dept. And your grandson has had a little accident, Nobody is hurt but he needs $500 bond to stay out of jail. .You can wire us the money at code name Natulus and Ill pick it up (true) and post it for him (False).

Now.. I made up that paragraph. But some key words.
NEMO Latan for NO MAN
I said "Nowhere" for the county

Of course your Grandson (he will tease the name out of you) is not there, has had no accident, is not in trouble and you will never see that money again less, as in the book (This is the fictional part) The police get lucky.

I have talked to real life victimes or attempt victimes of that scam (Some of them called me (Or one of my co-workers) BEFORE they sent the money.. Those scammers got bumpkis.

Another version of it involves Publisher's Clearing House.. You are a winner. ONly the caller has nothing to do with PCH, He wants you to wire him some "Front money"

ANother version is the same as the last but sent via the mail. Got one of those a couple months ago. Now that I did respond to but I don't think the scammers liked my response. I had teh "Front" payment delivered by a special agent (Postal inspector since they mailed it to me) and instead of cash they got a lovely set of matched stainless steel braclets made by Smith & Wesson company. A Free ride to a special "Hotel" Free room and board (After all asking for front money from a winner by US mail is a FEDERAL CRIME).

I am not terribly concerned about the hackers getting my information, if they really want it, they will get it either because I have it on line out of stupidity or because I had to for some unalterable requirement.

I'm not as concerned about hacking as I am about not being pestered by folks who we do not want to have contact with and my ignoring them might be a problem with someone I want to be friends with. I brought it up so yes, it is a family problem and I don't wish to exacerbate it any more than necessary and yet there are those folks that only use social media to communicate and some of them are pretty cool.

In addition to using a pseudonym and not using your own picture or one that identifies you, there were several other safeguards that were suggested. I have not and do not want to start filling out the FB registration cold, I want to have some advanced knowledge of what is required and have everything prepared in advance.
