Satellite Dish

Since there are no domes that work with our Dish Hopper receiver, and the roof mounted Trav'ler is limited by trees and its western arc only coverage, I'll stick to our tripod mounted dish. It sets up in about 10 minutes and can use either arc for added aiming options.

I certainly won't argue that automatic antenna units are easier, but my tripod mounted slimline never fails to work. I spend 7-8 months a year hosting at two different parks and never a week goes by that someone with a roof mounted antenna can't get a signal. Since I am retired and can set up and aim my antenna in minutes, I don't care that it takes a few minutes longer or is easier. After a few setups you can almost do it in your sleep. I have plenty of time and I always want TV.

If the park isn't full the camper with tree problems can always move to another site, but now what is faster?

With this being said, if a company comes up with an automatic portable dish that receives HD on DirecTV I would definitely buy one. Not so much for the time issue, but with it taking up less space when traveling.

We have a roof top mounted road trip mission and a portable Pathway X2.
For ease of use, the road trip wins hands down - just push a button and you are done.
For getting a signal consistently, the Pathway wins hands down. The dish itself is larger and it has less of a problem getting signal through trees and weather.
We have put the two side by side to test them - if there are trees in the way, the Pathway has a much better chance of finding satellites. But, it takes more work to get them (taking it out, running cable, hooking it up).

We're full-timers and we hardly ever find we can't get DirecTV because of trees using our rooftop Trav'ler. It depends on the places you go and the sites you get. In some parts of the US trees are rarely a problem, whereas in the northeast they can be a significant nuisance. Sometimes we have to live with SD signals from the 101 satellite and every once in a while we have to stream video if we can't get any signal at all.

While the automatic dish is a great item, I don't want one mounted on my 5'er. I would get one in a minute if there was an option for DirecTV HD, but there isn't and I'm not switching to Dish. My reason for not having a mounted unit is I camp host and I don't know how many times I have seen frustrated campers that can't get TV at all due to obstructions above their site. I can move my dish/tripod virtually anywhere and have TV. I have even set it up 150' away on top of a ridge to get over trees. Works like a champ.

Well I didn't see any mention of the Trav'ler in his last posting, so I'll add it here.

Replace that Kingdome with a Trav'ler....either for Direct or Dish as either will receive HD. Only problem with them is that you have to park the mh in a position so that the antenna has a direct view of the southern sky.

Push one button, the antenna rises from its stowed postion, searches until it finds all the required satellites and then locks on to them. Will with stand high winds, rain, and most all other moistures...even a light snow.

What more else could you ask for?? Hummmm?:B
