Shaw satellite

Shaw satellite operates in Canada. They had 2 satellites and have recently launched a third one. I have a dish and receiver which was compatible with the 2 satellites, but is not with the new one. That is ok. All I require is available on the first 2 satellites, with the 3 Rd satellite having more channels, and more HD channels

Now I do not have Shaw satellite (Shaw Direct) in Canada, but have cable. I had piggybacked with the satellite system in the USA. I am prepared to sign up for Shaw Direct (satellite) however I can only get the new equipment and access all 3 satellites from Canada. My question, if anyone might know is: do you think that by getting an active account with Shaw Direct this will still allow my older system (dish and HDPVR630) receiver to be hooked up and functional here in the USA.

Thx
  • Not sure from your post, you will need a Canadian address. I don't think your receiver is that old and I'm pretty sure it will work.

Shaw will not ship anything to the States and probably don't want to hear that you will be using it down south. They are not as annal as Bell. Of course Bell doesn't work down south anymore anyway.

I can give you a contact at Shaw Direct if you want.
  • Thanks cool Canuck. I have Canadian address and have shaw cable. I also have U.S. Address with Time Warner, and have shaw dish and HDPVR 630 wired and it was in use last year. I did piggyback off another Canadians system. Now with new Canadian satellite from Shaw, was just wondering whether you thought the system in California would work if I signed up in Canada for Shaw Direct. I think it might just work as well. I know Shaw do not want us to have access in the States, so will not call them. I actually hooked up my 2nd TV here the other night to the shaw receiver and dish then went online. It asked to enter acct. info and password in order to reset satellite, so with that again I think it might just work. Thx your comments
  • Shaw Direct has LNBFs that will receive either two satellites or three. Lots of people who don't need the channels on the 3rd sat. still use the old LNBF. You won't be able to pick up the 3rd sat. in any case (well, maybe in northern Cal.)

The 630 is Shaw Direct's current PVR (unfortunately).
  • I tried to send you a PM with some contact info, however, it seems you do not allow PMs. :(
  • I am using the 505 receiver which only uses the 2 satellites and it works into Mexico. The newer 630 receivers will work as well but will only display channels from the first 2 satellites until you are close to Canada.
  • We're back in Tucson AZ for the winter. Went home to Ontario for Christmas. Picked up Shaw receiver/PVR. Was working fine at home. Brought it back to Tucson in suitcase. Now having troubles tuning the Satellite Dish for Shaw Direct in the trailer. Worked OK last year.

This is what it says on the screen:

    A. Unit Id-----------------whole bunch of numbers which I guess identifies my unit
    B. Auth. Status (Tuner 1)---------REFRESH REQUIRED(MP)
    C. Signal Level (Tuner 1)---------(396):29, EcbNo:-0.7dB
    D. Auth. Status (Tuner 2)---------Unavailable
    E. Signal Level (Tuner 2)--------(0):0,EcbNo:-10.0 dB
    F: Map Status---------------------Exists, 579-4320
    G. Trip Count----------------------0
    H. Current Firmware Version--------42.47

Down here in AZ, I have the large elliptical dish, about 5 years old.
Receiver model has "DSR630" on the back. I presume this is the model number.

I have the satellite dish set at 178 degrees magnetic, about 60 degree altitude, 0 skew. This dish worked OK last 5 years.

If I press the A button on the remote, T1 shows up as a flashing red/yellow/green line (more red than anything else), T2 is very sensitive. If I'm lucky, I can get it to flash red occasionally.

From this I assume that I should be able to get a signal down here. However, is it possible one of the dish heads has gone bad ? Or something has changed from last year ?

    Anyone help ?!! PLEASE. Thanks
  • Go to the Shaw website, create an account with your billing info and do a receiver refresh. That might get you going. I don't know what you mean about T1 and T2. My A button does nothing.
  • You need to get a signal level into the upper 40's or better.

According to http://www.dishpointer.com/ you need Azmuth 163.1 mag., elev 52.3 and a skew of -5.7.
These are usually a good place to start.

You need to get a signal before a Receiver Refresh will do any good.
  • Re my posting above:

All is well !! Tried to tune again in the late afternoon/early evening and it was easy ! Got both satellites well. Getting the same programs as in Ontario.

I seem to remember from my crystal radio days that there were certain radio programs I could only pick up in the evenings. Anyone remember Dan Dare on Radio Luxemburg 108?! I guess it must be the atmospherics - waves going to the ground instead of being dispersed into space ?
