Smart phone use as a wi-fi "hot spot"

Thanks for the comments so far. I'm wondering about signal strength using the smart phone. Seems now that wherever I am, my Mi-Fi shows one bar higher signal strength than I get on my flip phone (e.g. now I have 2 bars on the Mi-Fi but only one bar on my flip phone). My Mi-Fi has never dropped a signal here, but my phone has.
