This is a definite possibility, though I have seen drives drop and reconnect due to corrupt drivers. Have you checked in device manager for a yellow warning sign on your USB drives? Most times you can delete the driver in device manager and search for new hardware (or restart) and it will be rebuilt. If a corrupt driver persists, you will have to update it through mfgr website.
