Suggestions, software for laptop mapping and GPS--solved

Since S&T's is no more, I'm looking for program to plan route on laptop(still use GPS receiver), and be able to export route to Garmin. Don't find much with search. One I did find that sounded good was Garmin Mobile PC, but it seems to be discontinued.

Jim

Downloaded CoPilot software for platform, downloaded maps I wanted,$20. Obtained BU-354 GPS receiver, $30. Created first route to try it out, works as it should. Quite different from S&T's, but has many of the same features. Thanks to all who responded.

Got a reply from Garmin regarding Basecamp. Although it is a mapping program, one cannot use it as location updating on a route. The software is not compatible with GPS receivers. If you just need to create a route, it works, just not to travel by as S&T's would. Still looking.

One more reason to not let Win 10 update. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have MS streets & trips 2013 disk and was wondering if you have so many re installs? I heard that you have a limited amount (4)?
Im going to have my laptop with windows 10 reinstalled with windows 7 so I can use my S&T. I like S&T better than any other GPS programs I have tried.

So you're going backwards - from Win 10 to Win 7 ?
I bought a $200 laptop/tablet with Win 8.1 to run S&T - I can detach the keyboard and link the tablet to the GPS puck. Works fine.

I don't believe that there is any limitation on installs for Streets & Trips 2013
I think that I'm up to five or six installs so far over a period of time.
Microsoft Office did top out at four installs - which is probably what you're referring to.

Yes may have to go backwards if I can't get windows 10 to work with a GPS antenna. I have a HP laptop with windows 8.1 and the S&T works fine but it's to big to use in my truck while driving. I also have a ACER netbook laptop ( 11" screen )that works fine when I had windows 7 on it, but I did the up grade to 10 and now I won't work with S&T.
I use the ACER netbook for trips so going back won't be a problem so long as I can use the S&T GPS.
It's great to hear that I can do more installs of S&T.
Thanks for your help. Jay

I have a Win 10 tablet and I'm using a Bluetooth GPS receiver that works well. I also have a Garmin eTrex handheld GPS that I have used in the past. I have not tried the eTrex after doing the Win 10 anniversary update.

Tom, I know that S&T will run on windows 10 and it just won't recognize the antenna like you said and I want to use it like a GPS while driving just like I did with windows 7. If I know for sure that a after market antenna would work I would just buy one, have you tried it or know someone who has done it! Thanks for your input. Jay

Garmin Basecamp works fine and can transfer the route to your Garmin device. It _does_ require some effort to learn it and is not intuitive.

There are a few great offline mapping programs for tablets like iPAd and Android. I'm an Android user and have both CoPilot, and Sygic on my Galaxy Tab S2.

How do you like Sygic?

I've looked at it before and considering it. Too bad their website is designed like a 3rd grader's Leap Frog screen. Hard to find anything out.

Do you use the car or the Caravan/RV version?

One is under $30, the other under $90. Did you notice enough value?

What about the live traffic addons? It seems the car version is included lifetime, where the Caravan/RV is $19/yr.

Is it worth it?

when using a laptop with Delorme Atlas/topo maps you see on the maps all kinds of details that are not on small scale map displays .We have discovered many ,many wonderfull un advertised discoveries thanks to the large displays on laptop

The closest thing to S&T's is BaseCamp (free from Garmin).
But BaseCamp is a mind-twister to get started with - it works very differently from Streets & Trips.

Microsoft crippled Streets & Trips by not letting it produce an exportable GPX file that was compatible with Garmin.

Google Maps provides an export feature. Google's file extension is either a KML or .KMZ
The .KMZ file can be imported into BaseCamp
After importing the file into BC, you can arrange your waypoints as you like. Then Export your completed travel plan to your GPS receiver.

You could still use S&T's connected to a GPS receiver to see where you are on a map.
(I've used a Bluetooth GPS puck linked to S&T's on the laptop - is that what you're doing?)
And use your Garmin unit for instructional purposes.
To my knowledge, BC doesn't do real-time location syncing with the receiver.

Coming back to GPS, anybody know details why Delorme discontinued their street atlas?
From what I understand Delorme sold to Garmin and perhaps Garmin considered Street Atlas to be a competitor to BaseCamp. Personally I think they just consider that everyone now uses either a smart phone or a tablet for navigating, and they don't give a hang about the other people that aren't onboard with the "latest and greatest", even if the old products do the job as good or better.

Speaking of weird stuff and cars. We discovered that if the anti-theft siren on our son's Volvo is not working due to corrosion or a bad connection, the sunroof won't open, and if open won't close. There is no icon, or any alert telling you that the siren doesn't work, but the sunroof won't operate. Try figuring that one out.

your right
but what you are speaking of, is PLC type programing
"Programable Logic Controller"
if this switch and this input sensor are in this state, do this
its written in assembly logic that looks like a "chutes and ladders" diagram
when done correctly is fairly easy to read , understand and debug

i've done a lot of it, custom stuff to operate custom built industrial machinery

but problems arise when the engineer designing the machinery is not familiar with the operation environment

the bmw engineer to told the programmer to do this
never gave thought to a switch malfunction

in a mfg shop environment, when the door switch failed and the machine would not operate, i would be called to fix it

like you said "limp home mode" for the tranny was pretty stupid for the door switch failure, although the idea was probably to keep someone from moving the car with the door ajar and prevent a child from falling out
you can't drive the car because of a bad door switch/sensor then you have to have it towed to the shop, to figure out whats going on

but thats a long ways and off tangent from "substance abuse"
that was corporate decision, not the programmers fault

as a side note: there many types of programming and many languages to do it in, and ive studied and use several of them
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !
