Synology just released a new NAS OS...

If anyone has a Synology NAS, the latest 6.0 update is out and supports almost all models within the past few years.

Normally I don't post mindlessly about a commercial product, but have been pleasantly surprised at how well these units work, and their potential for use for an RV. The smaller DS216j model runs off of 12 volts, while there are models that offer a lot more RAM and CPU power so you can have them download files automatically, sync to cloud providers, and so on.

Definitely worth a look, and I'm probably going to buy one (likely a DS216j model) for backups of my stuff while RV-ing.
  • I'm going to go for a DS216+ for a similar reason. iSCSI is dog slow on my current DS215j, so I plan to upgrade, then use the DS215j for the RV. Since it uses 12 volts coming in, I can use a voltage regulator, and instead of HDDs, use a pair of SSDs for vibration resistance.

This way, even out in the boonies, I still have not just backups, but a way to reload the machine from PXE.
  • RS2414+ here... Upgraded this afternoon to 6.0 from 5.1 (yikes it was two updates behind!)

I didn't really read the release notes, just had some downtime on the array, figured why not update. What's the major new/updated feature everyone is excited about? The only feature I'm using is iscsi-target, have the unit setup as a SAN shared by a few servers.

This unit's being phased out, toooo daaaaarn slow, replaced it with an HPE MSA 2040 with dual 40 gigabit controllers.

No, this is not in my RV :)
  • How many RV's have a Network Attached Storage solution in them I ask? For sure at least two. It's on my list but there's about 4 million other things I'm needing before that...

    :)
  • I have a DS214se that I have all my movies ripped to so I can watch my movies without using the disc. I just upgraded to the new software. This unit has worked flawlessly for 2 years so far. I also have my Macbook backup to this and another network drive so it one goes bad I still have a recent backup.

Before anyone starts with the DRM issues, I rip the movies for my personal use. I do not copy them and sell or give away copies. If the film industry would give me new copies when my dvd no longer plays I would not do this.
