Tell me why they won't interchange???

I have access to several sat dish's, both in Direct TV and Dish TV brands, that are of the oval design/same size etc.

I like the Dish brand adjustments for tilt/angle and skew better than the Direct TV set up.

Can I take the Dish brand backing plate w/adjustments and bolt it to the Direct TV brand dish, as long as the focal length is the same and the bolt patterns are the same and using the Direct TV LBN's etc?

Any other info I should be aware of?

Tia,
Don
  • Well guys,

Thanks for the info, I tried.

After spending a day tearing several dish's apart (both brands) and checking/measureing the LBN arms/attachments etc, I found out that Dish brand backing plate/part will NOT fit a Direct TV dish, hole spacing was not correct and the LNB arms are shorter and not the correct size to hold the Direct TV LNB arms etc.

FYI, the Direct TV dish is a 2006 PH I Multi-sat dish w/3 LNB heads, is the one I was attempting to convert.

So it's back to the Direct TV dish for now.

    Tia,

  • I know that the DTV dish can be used with Dish system but because of the way the LNB for Direct is set you can not get all of the transponders. I have a Directv Phase11 dish that I modified and it work on Dish, had to trim the LNB arm. However, since then, I reworked it for Directv. Using three separate LNB's

The Arm that holds the LNB and the dish must be "Mated" the backing plates however are interchangable.

The problem is I think the arm is attached to the backing plate

In that case. if the arm is EXACTLY the same length and angle and so on, AND the LNB heads fit, again you can interchange.

But the arms have to be identical.

YOU can buy dish, arm and LNB from some retailers in such a way as you home brew your own antenna, up to 8 satellites and yes dual band.

Best advice in this case:: Try it and see,, In your own yard, If it works, Let us know how it worked out)

:h Could it be because it "was in your basement"? ;)

Could be. I guess it depends on which way my basement is pointing.

  • The dish, arm and LNB are the parts that must be compatible. How you mount that would likely not make any difference. A DirecTV SL3 LNB is not compatible with the Dish service at all and vice versa. However, the original Dish/DirecTV setup was one single round LNB mounted to a round 18" antenna and this setup can be used for either service. For DirecTV that will receive the SD programming only and for Dish you have to pick which 1 of their 3 satellites you want to get programming from.
  • I've done the opposite. A DirecTv Slimline dish was a bit too large for my basement. I took a Dish Network 1000.2 dish and modded a DirecTv SL3-S LNB to it. It works well, but the signal levels are about 10 points lower than with the larger Slimline dish.

There's a bunch of discussion about this basic idea in this thread on another forum. There is some discussion of using the 1000.2 dish on the page shown in the link.
