Troubleshooting satellite hookup

We recently acquired a Wineguard Carryout antenna. The guy we got it from said it worked when he last used it. (Haven't paid him for it yet so not out anything there.) We had a new receiver installed at the house and kept the old one to put in the trailer. It is a Direct TV standard def receiver that works fine in the house.
I got the receiver hooked up and when it is connected to wall plate (satellite connector) I get the error message 771, no signal. When I connect the coax directly from the carryout to the receiver, the receiver shows searching for signal, but no signal. The dip switches on the antenna are set to Direct TV.
It seems logical to me to make sure the antenna to receiver connection is working and then try to figure out the trailer wiring issue. I know to check connectivity on the coax cable, but is there some other setting I need to check.

    I finally got reception when I connect the coax cable directly from the antenna to the receiver. The signal on all Direct TV satellites is strong. However, when I connect the coax to the plate in the docking station and connect the receiver to the satellite connector at the entertainment center, there is no signal.
    We are going to the FROG rally in a couple of weeks so I am just going to put it on my service request to check the satellite wiring connections. I pulled the outside and inside plates to make sure those connections were tight so the break is somewhere in between.

    RoyB has it. Run cable direct from dish to DTV box. Then run 12 volts direct from good hot battery to dish. Then change settings on box from whatever to 18 inch round and FROM SWM to whatever and it shd work.

    Did you face the dish close to the correct azimuth? You could be 180 degrees off. Try turning the Carryout.

    If it is a newer style box, it may require SWM set up. It also may require an in line B band converter.
    The settings in the satellite set up in the receiver may need to be changed as well (type of dish, LNB or SWM settings).

    It probably has to do with the 12VDC CONTROL VOLTAGE that needs to go up the COAX to the turn-on the DISH HEADS... If there is anything in these lines like splitters etc it may inhibit the 12VDC.

    I would eliminate the RV first and try direct connections to see if everything is working then add the long RG cables and paths getting inside your RV.

    Back in the day when I was bringing along my extra SAT DISH and SAT RCVR from home I could not use the so-called SAT CONNECTOR on the trailer. I had to run the RG cables thru the RV window directly to the SAT RCVRs to get them to work.
