TV with vertical lines

We have a Sharp Aquos 32" LCD HDTV that was installed new in 2007. It has operated flawlessly in the past six years up until a couple of weeks ago. Now, when the set has set for 12 (or so) hours and when I turn it on, the screen comes up with vertical lines of different widths and different colors that take up the entire width of the screen. The colors and lines will change every few seconds or so and will eventually black out (with very small dots) altogether before more lines appear. After a few minutes of this, the screen will then show the current picture (show) and operate normally until then next day when we turn it on again.

Is this an indication that the set is going out and should I start looking for a replacement?

thanks

Ron
  • The tv in our house has been doing that for about three months now. It seems like it is warming up. Works fine after. We only need it to last another six months so we are hoping it will last that long.
  • Check the AC line voltage going to the set; it may be too low and the fluorescent tube used to illuminate the screen isn't starting correctly.

It may be time to replace the LCD set with an LED/LCD set.
  • not the fluorescent back lighting
color is controlled by the lcd display, driven by driver chips from the video decoder

    yes , its dying

  • Panasonic and Visio are 2 of the most popular. I have 3 Visio's and they all perform very well.

What did you two a couple of weeks ago... Some LED lights will interfere with your HDTV.. Perhaps you just had some installed...

A failing fluorescent back light can feed enough EMI into the video decoder chips to make garbage on the screen when the tube flashes on.
  • No LED lights installed. Not sure what could have caused this other than the set just getting old.

This unit has three sets of component inputs and uses two of them. Doing a little research, I can't seem to find a unit that has more than one set of component inputs. Not sure what the two sets of wires go to, as I only have one DVD/CD player and the Winegard switch unit. I use an HDMI cable for my DISH sat receiver that bypasses the switch unit. I do have a rear DVD/CD unit for the rear TV, but I don't think they are connected together.

My component cabinet is stuffed with the DVD/CD player, DISH receiver, and the Winegard switch unit...so trying to get in back of them to trace the wires is impossible without have to remove both the DISH receiver and the switch unit.

We spend our summers here in Oregon, so probably will wait until we get home in October before trying to figure this out. Hope the existing TV lasts that long.
