Weather radios, etc

Regarding a smartphone app, I use OnGuard. Actually bought this one - for about $2, based on a recommendation from a fellow RVer on this forum. It works VERY well. Been using it for about a year now - it's been doing its job from the East Coast to the Left Coast. Using the phone's GPS, it alerts for whatever county you are in. ONLY drawback is it is limited to exactly where you are, not what may be headed your way... I still have and use a regular weather radio in the camper. This alerts for whatever counties are in radio range. I do not use SAME codes when I am on the road. When I am concerned about threatening weather, I check my paper maps (just 'cuz I have GPS, etc., I STILL carry paper maps...), and note the county I am in, plus surrounding counties, usually to the west/southwest, since that is "usuallY" where storms move in from. So when it alerts at 0-dark-thirty that XYZ county has a severe weather alert, I can quickly know if I am in the "line of fire" and need to beat-feet or hunker down, or just go back to bed. Cheap insurance in my opinion. ST

We have the Midland. It will work on 110v, battery or 12 volt power. It has an alarm function so that if there is an emergency warning in the middle of the night it can be set to wake you. We spent our first summer RVing with an earthquake, a hurricane, and a early Fall snow storm. We decided after to get one of these and not have to rely on local forecasts that seem to guess at what the conditions are and don't always mention the NOAA warnings.

What app are you using that will keep track of where you are located and sound an alarm that's loud enough to wake the dead when there is a severe WX watch or warning for your area?

Does that app override all other functions of that "smart phone"?

I use a handheld VHF from west Marine. I can take it anywhere.

I have a Midland. it can be annoying when conditions are both threatening and changing, but I'd rather be alive and annoyed than peaceful and in pieces scattered all over the countryside by a tornado.

I only enable the SAME features on occasion, Normally I leave it in Travel mode,,, mostly because I do (Travel that is)

Also all my ham gear has weather starting at memory 30.. No particular reason for starting at 30 save... Well.. When I first put 162.550 into a memory .. it was 30.

For those of you with the Jensen AWM975 it has a built in Weather Band:

I din't pay that much I got it from Amazon for almost 1/2 that price.

With a smart phone and a computer I think these weather radios are going the way of CBs.

I never considered using the WEATHER RADIO with smart modes. It has to be setup for every county you end up in.

I permanently installed the inexpensive RADIO SHACK WX RADIO Model 12-260. I removed the batteries and use the multi-set DC-DC converter power cord with proper DC Adapter and have this WX Radio plugged into 12VDC. The only smarts this WX RADIO has is it will search for the NOAH WX channel when you first turn it on. This solves my problem of having to setup anything as I travel from place to place. It is nice and loud and has served me well over the past 5-years of having my OFF-ROAD POPUP.

This WX RADIO is mounted to back side of the sink assembly that has to be folded up in place when we setup so everytime we stop to setup the POPUP I reset the 12VDC power for the WX RADIO. It finds the working WX Channel and all is ready to go for that area.

When I get my first WX RADIO alert of something coming at us then I fire up the HDTV using the OTA BATWING antenna and look for the local digtal high def NATL BROADCAST TV station that has a 24-hour WX channel going. Being caught out in the POPUP with high winds is unnerving...

Having a good working WX RADIO setup is a must have item IMO if you are camping in a OFF-ROAD POPUP camper.



Here at the house I have the smart mode WX RADIO which only monitors my county for WX Alerts.
