WINDOWS 10 software compatibility issues?

Have you had problems after installation of older software? We purchased a new computer recently, and it worked fine for 12 days. Then it lost WI-FI connectivity. A Best Buy "Geek" tried to fix it, and computer died! We got our money back, but we're doing some research before buying another one.

I installed QUICKEN 2010,and wondered if that caused a problem. The program worked fine the one time I used it.

Mlts22's suggestion to use VM software is good but is somewhat misleading in that whether you use free VM software such as VirtualBox or VMWarePlayer or whether you use the paid version of VMWare Workstation, in order to create a VM, you need an OS with Product Key to install. The VM software by itself is useless without an operating system to install.

One idea you can do is use some virtualization software (VirtualBox is free, but I pay the C-notes for VMWare Workstation because it has a lot more features, and is the de facto standard), and put your older applications in a virtual machine.

The advantage of doing this is that when you upgrade hardware, you just copy the VM's files from the old box to the new box... the older application and its environment never has to be modified, and is secure from hack attempts because the VM software can be configured to "hide" the VM from the outside world using NAT (network address translation.) Another advantage is that one can use snapshots and back those up.

A small business I help out has a very creaky old version of some specialty software which will not run on anything newer than XP. Since the software never touches the Web, and only accesses a shared directory, it sits in a virtual machine configured with no network adapters, and has been moved from physical machine to machine for a number of years now. So far, so good. Periodic scans of the VM's virtual drive files have shown it to be clean of any nasties.

I am forced to stay on Win8.1 (which is fine with me) because of a compatibility issue with MS Money. It won't run on Win10 and Microsoft has sunset Money.

MS Money runs fine on my windows 10 machine. I updated to Win10 from Windows 8.1.

What version are you running? I'm running Money Plus Deluxe cira 2007 - 2008 version 17.0.120.3817.

Mine says version 17.0.150.3817

Some programs can be forced to work in compatibility mode.

Upgrading just for the sake of having the newest operating system makes no sense.

This is my take as well. I have a number of Win 7 and Win 8 machines that I will not be upgrading.

I have Windows 7 and really see no reason to upgrade to 10. I mainly only use my computer for Excel and Word programs and to monitor several rv forums and fb along with my email.

Based on that, does anyone have an opinion if I should upgrade or not?

Never got Ghost to work and quit buying Norton products years ago; it had become so bloated.

Didn't. I got it for free.

Ghost was fine, unless you know something I don't.
