Windows 7 Sound Controls

In the past week or so I've been having problems with sound controls on my computer, which has Windows 7 & which I got in Dec. 2012.

The real problem is where in the blazes is the Mute or unmute button?

{{{Now, granted I watch some sites with live stream which have a sound level button and I usually want to lower the volume level so that I can hear other sounds in the house - radio, people......}}}

& I haven't watched any DVDs or youtube much of late.

But what has been happening is that I might put up a site with some sound or start a youtube video and the sound will run for 10 seconds and cut out.

I want to be find where this control is so that I adjust sound levels to my needs of the moment.

& I'm in Firefox.

Please Advise

There's got to be a better forum for Windows 7 questions than this one!

And if you want to put the speaker icon in your notification area:

Right-click an empty area on the taskbar, and then click Properties.

Under Notification area, click Customize.

Click Turn system icons on or off.

For each system icon, click On in the list to show the icon in the notification area, or click Off to completely remove the icon from the notification area.

Click OK, and then click OK again.

I don't have that icon in my Windows 7

What I have is an icon that then asks me to open up hidden icons. I can't find anything in speaker shaped or other icons with the word "mute".

Look at the speaker symbol in the right bottom corner next to the date and time. Click on it. A window opens with a vertical slide control and below that a little speaker. Click on the speaker. It is the mute control. Hope this helps.
