yes, that has happened to me. last time was when I had updates set to automatic on Win98..12 to 15-years ago. hasn't happened to me since. YMMV. but, I now have updates set to notify only and I perform an image backup of the C:\ partition before I do a backup just in case.

Best thing that happened to me is switching my 2 computers to Linux Mint.

FYI - Microsoft tries to group as many of the updates together as possible, and rolls them out once a month, starting just after midnight on the second Tuesday of the month. Too many business computers are turned off over the weekend so they avoid that, and they want to do it early in the week to allow tech support more time if there are problems.

I don't understand the issue either and I have been running various Windows programs since Win311 came out back in the 80's and never have had an issue with things going astray. This is especially true now days with the multicore processors and low cost memory.

Friend of ours had that problem. He'd bought himself a 2-gig Toshiba with Win 7. Over the years, he'd installed heaven knows how many programs, including multiple anti-virus programs and more toolbars in his browser than he knew what to do with. And he kept on interrupting Win updates, choosing to leave the computer on overnight once a week. Of course, the machine became slower and slower with time until finally thing poor thing would nearly bog down completely with just a simple update operation. Train wreck. And he thought he needed a new computer.

So I uninstalled bunches of unneeded programs and tons of extensions. (He didn't know what most of them were.) Updated Windows. Explained to him that he should NOT turn off his computer during update installs. And got an extra 2 gigs of memory installed. The computer is now running like new.

I can honestly say that I have had MS Updates screw up 1 time that I can remember. It's just never been an issue with the 5 computers that I work with. But like I said, I never let MS update my hardware drivers. That is where I've seen other people have problems.
