drinking water

What do most of you do for drinking water in your RV's? We don't like the idea of drinking the water that has been sitting around in our fresh water tank, so we've kept containers of drinking water in the sinks while we travel and on the counter when we're parked. That's getting to be a nuisance, though. We've seen lots of filters for the water coming in, but then it would still sit in the tank.

Wow - in 20 years of using our several different fivers and more lately a MH we almost always have used the cg water as it comes from the faucet - assuming we have a water hookup. If not we drink/use the water as it comes from our storage tank! Nope - never been sick while Rving!! Some folks are paranoid and I guess some are lucky??

I think there's an elusive middle ground here that no one has hit upon- it's mostly the "always drink tank water crowd" vs. the "never drink tank water crowd"

So here's some additional thoughts:

...if the water in the tank is two months old, I'm probably not going to drink it.

But if we are really camping and using the water tank, the water is only going to last three to five days- so it won't get too stale.

Also, if you absolutely refuse to ever drink tank water ever at all whatsoever...perhaps you are a germophobe.

Conversely, if you find bottled water conveinient and like it's taste versus any number of other sources, that does not neccesarily make you a germophobe.

Or you have never had an intestinile illness like cryptosporidium.

So what do you do at home to protect yourself? :h

...And, is there something special about RV water tanks that grows bacteria any better than a municipal water tank, or an open glass of water where there's a steady rain of microbes falling from the air?

Sure, bugs are bad and you should wash your hands after you go to the bathroom, but if you are properly caring for your water system with routine sterilizations and filling it with chlorinated water, please tell me what the elevated risk is?

The cysts that cause Cryptosporidiosis are in feces (poop). Maybe you are drinking from the wrong tank. :B

A filter rated at one micron or less will remove the cysts.

there is a ton of clay in the water here. about every two weeks I have to go clear the screen in input to the filter. Filters plug fast here as well. I and the dog drink only bottled "spring water". The spring water seems to have a lot better taste than the purified water.

Wow, now that is some iron! I have two wells on my property, the house well has significant iron particulate. It is akin to the filtered water sample in your first picture. We have a whole house filter and a water softener to make the water usable. The outside water faucets have no filters and if I leave a glass of water sitting for 15 mins., I will get results similar to sample #2. It is drinkable, though, but has a definite mineral taste.
My other well is fed by a spring and at one time, was a community well (think 1850's). Guess which well supplies my RV water?;)

If you use a good filter to fill your tank that takes out all those nasty critters from any water and supplement it with a kitchen water filter for drinking, the water will taste great.
