I bought a new Surveyor Select but the mattress is as hard as a rock. I can also feel the hinges on the fold up storage area underneath as well as the difference in thickness of the pieces of plywood. My other trailer had a Serta mattress but it wasn't much better.
Don't they make box springs for RV'?
Or do I need to put foam rubber under the mattress or what?

Thanks

I went to the local Original Mattress Factory store. The sales guy knew exactly what I needed. It was a short queen, and kind of a cross between a mattress and box springs. The bottom was a wooden frame, hinged where my storage bin was, with a pillowtop mattress on top. All one piece. It's more comfortable and no more expensive than a regular pillowtop mattress at another mattress store.

We bought a 2.5" from Walmart - what a difference! It doesn't fit perfectly but it's good enough.

We have a 3" memory foam topper and it makes the bed very comfortable. If you buy one, pay attention to the density of the foam - heavier is better and it should be breathable foam so it doesn't make you hot, or have the cool gel layer. Cheap is not better. These ARE NOT the $20 crate foam tops. We purchased ours at Sam's Club approx 8-10 years ago for $170 queen size. We did not cut ours off, rather the regular queen fitted sheets fit and it just folds down over the bottom of the mattress. I flip the end up and over onto the bed when we put the slide in to travel.

We have a sleep number bed at home and after a two week trip on the stock RV mattress we bought on for the RV when Camping World had them on sale.

I had similar trouble with a thin “factory” mattress. I searched quite a bit and ended up going to http://www.lovemymattress.com/for a mattress. They are very helpful on the phone and specialize in RV mattresses. We used it all season in 2012 and it was comfortable. I am sure there are many nice mattresses out there, but this is what I did.

If I were living in it, I'd opt for a new comfortable to me mattress but to camp/vacation in...memory foam is a much less expensive route to go and makes a tremendous difference in a good nights sleep.

Memory foam topper - many purchase from overstock.com. Even if you have odd sized bed you can cut the foam to size - makes a world of difference and doesn't cost an arm/leg.

Putting box springs under a mattress would make it either very HIGH from the floor or would mean loosing that valuable under bed storage. OFTEN it might also mean relocating other items sometimes located under the bed (like water bypass systems, water filters etc). There are some quite comfortable RV mattresses and if the better ones are not comfortable enough they are often used with a 2" memory foam topper. My mattress in the RV is as comfortable as my mattress at home but comfort is a personal matter. You'd need to look around for the solution that suits YOUR OWN comfort.

Instead of band aida, why not simply buy a quality mattress from your local store? Seems like a better use of the money to me. We installed the same version of our home mattress in the trailer and could not be happier.

The mattress is too hard, and yet you're able to feel the uneven contours underneath? I agree with CincyGus that a memory foam might work.
I have a thin 1.5" memory foam topper that I put into a duvet cover, and it transforms my generic mattress cushions into a dream sleeper.
Good luck.

I've not found a RV matress yet that was to my liking. The Serta's that are normal home thickness seem hard. Our little TT came with a little thin matress that is about 3" think and just slightly softer than the plywood it lays on. We bout a 3" memory foam pad from Sam's club and put on top of it and used it all last year. Was so comfortable, we took the memory foam pad out of the camper after we finished last year and moved it to our home bed.

Last weekend, I went and bought two more, one for the camper bed and one to slice in half for the two bunks in the rear my daughter and her friends use. Now we all will sleep in comfort.

These ran about $100 each and for us, were money well spent. They don't get hot, they relief the pressure point pain we were waking with prior to having them and we are sold on them.
