I had never heard of Hobo Pies, so asked Google what they were. Here is a quote from the Urban Dictionary:"The real hobo pie is a special kind of sandwich. Normally made in the firepit. A cooker with long handles attaches to iron plates (shaped like a small frisbee) on each side, it is attached together at the fire end of the utensil so you can securely close it before putting it in the fire. You place buttered bread in each 1/2 (to cut down on sticking), and between the bread any assortment of food (turkey and cheese, or ragu sauce with cheese and meat). Then close the handles to secure it, and roast it over your campfire. After a few minutes you open it up and pop out your authentic Hobo pie. "Anything? How about baloney and cheese? PB&J? pizza sauce and pepperoni?

We always called them Pudgie Pies and used pizza makings but you can make heated sandwiches too.

In in-house testing we tried the recommended canned apple & cherry pie fillings - unsatisfactory.What do you "pro" hobos use for fillings?I think what you call them is just a function of where in the country you live.I searched on Pie Iron and came up with lots of hits within this forum of recipes that people have listed.Girl Scouts often call them Tonka Toasters.Some folks call them pudgie pies (although I never heard that other than on this forum) Rome, which is the most popular commercial brand sold, calls them pie irons.I've never actually heard anyone call them a hobo pie until this thread.You can make much more than sweets or desserts in a pie iron.Here on the forum, people have listed recipes for Pizza, breakfasts of all sorts (eggs, bacon, sausage, onions, etc).

Don't need a recipe, put anything you like in a pie. Half the fun is trying out new things. One of our favorite dessert sandwiches is with strawberry jam, sliced bananas and marshmallows. Yum. (the marshmallows hold it together). You can do the same with Nutella instead of jam.

Yes, stay away from aluminum, get cast iron. I personally like the ROUND ones....me thinks the square ones are sandwich makers, NOT pie makers. :B A seasoned, hot, ROUND pie maker, seals the bread with a golden brown color...warm inners. YUMMY. Pizza is probably the favorite, followed by any flavor of pie filling (cherry, apple, peach, etc...)

Grew up calling them hobo pies, but most around here say mountain pies. No matter what you call them, the kids (and adults) will enjoy making them.

For anyone out there thinking of getting some pie irons, get the cast iron ones. The aluminum, from my experience, don't work as well.

We called them "fried pies" growing up. It was a contest to see who could come up with the most outrageous concoction! Pork and beans with sliced up hot dog and a little BBQ sauce anyone?
We bought some cast iron pie makers last summer and just got around to trying them out about a month ago in the fire place at home. Made rubens, yum!!!

Yup. Bush pies made in Pie Irons and we hardly ever use ours for dessert. My favourite is the breakfast bush pie.

You beat me to it pappcam, definitely bush pies around here.

A bit of pizza sauce, pepperoni, and cheese is a popular filling. I'm not very fancy, the canned cherry pie filling tastes delicious to me.

With a little cheese they turn out almost like a breakfast sandwich. And like any other egg, cook them long enough and the yolk gets firm. I prefer a soft yolk though.
