Traveling during the summer so heat won't be a problem as I live in drought stricken, hotter than hades California ๐
In that case make sure to leave the A/C on, just turn the thermostat up to 85 to save energy and still keep the house from getting too hot. At least that setting works for us in Florida and also keeps the humidity down.

If I'm leaving for more than a week:
Unplug and turn off everything except fridge. Also furnace if it's winter.
Shut off water.
Have the post office hold the mail until I get back.
Notify the one neighbor we have.
That's about it.
IMPORTANT:
This may seem extreme, but stop posting on Internet sites, especially social media like Facebook and Twitter, that you're leaving. Criminals frequently check these for people saying they're leaving for certain times. Then they rob them blind. Pics on your account often have locations embedded. And social media sites track where your posting from. A lot of criminals that didn't pass high school know how to figure out your location. Just a tip. I run across this weekly during peak vacation times in my job.

Call you electric utility provider and tell them you are going to be on an extended vaca. We had gotten home after a 2 month trip and so happens I see a utility truck pull in my driveway. I go ask him what's up and he says he's here to change my meter. He says there's been unusual activity, like lack of normal usage. So I tell him we have been gone for 2 months and there is no problem with the meter. He went and checked the seal on the meter and then said bye.
Call your credit card co. too and let them know what states you will be in and how long your going to be gone. Out of state activity on a CC is a red flag for fraud. They know your buying patterns. Have fun on the trip.
