Take the time to get a service manual for your genny from Onan. They tend to be well-written and very informative. I called my local Cummins/Onan dealer and the parts man emailed me a copy at no charge. I'm not sure about the 4K's but I always use 30 weight in my 6.5.

On our Onan 4K I used Rotella 10w30 from Walmart. Took quart and half, one of the easier things I've had to do. Calls for 10w30 - 15w40 based on temp.

I like straight 30W.
